Gun Ban Overturned

A federal judge ruled Friday that California's ban on semi-automatic and military-style rifles was unconstitutional. The ruling overturns a three-decade-old prohibition on such weapons, with US District Judge Roger Benitez concluding the law deprived residents of commonly owned guns, such as the AR-15, allowed in most other states.

In the ruling, Benitez found the weapons fell within the protections afforded by the Second Amendment, arguing the application of semi-automatic rifles for military purposes does not preclude usefulness in home defense and other applications. Despite the law, which was instituted in 1989, more than 185,000 such rifles are registered with the state. Find a link to Benitez's full decision here.

The ruling was suspended for 30 days to provide state officials a chance to appeal. 

Iranian Ships Round Africa

A pair of Iranian naval vessels reportedly rounded Africa's Cape of Good Hope over the weekend, on an apparent course to cross the Atlantic Ocean. US officials say the maneuver may be a provocation by the Iranian government, or the ships may attempt to reach Venezuela, a country with which Iran has strengthened ties in recent years. If the latter is true, the US has signaled it will intervene if it believes the ships are delivering military equipment to the Nicolás Maduro regime.

Iran has often threatened to enter the waters of the Western Hemisphere, typically reversing course and abandoning plans. A successful Atlantic voyage would mark a victory for the country's navy, which has endured a number of recent setbacks, including a mysterious fire last week that sunk its largest warship.

Trump Ban Extended 

Former President Donald Trump's accounts will remain suspended from Facebook's social media platforms until January 2023, the company announced Friday. The decision followed a ruling from its independent oversight board that supported the initial ban but chastised Facebook for lack of clarity around why an indefinite suspension was doled out. 

The company initially suspended Trump for comments made in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 storming of the US Capitol. The oversight board found the posts violated Facebook's policies, but bounced the decision back to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. At the time of the ban, Trump reached almost 60 million users between Facebook and Instagram. 

Separately, Trump made his second public speech Saturday since leaving office, delivering remarks at the North Carolina GOP convention. Trump endorsed Rep. Ted Budd (R, NC-13) to replace retiring Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), after his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, declined to run for the seat.
