Tragedy in Surfside

At least one person has been confirmed dead with almost 100 people unaccounted for as rescue crews worked around the clock yesterday, searching for survivors of the partial collapse of a Miami-area condo building. Thirty-five people have been pulled from the rubble; at least one woman reportedly had to have her leg amputated in order to be freed.

Investigators have just begun to probe potential causes for the collapse. The building, constructed in 1981, was undergoing roof repairs at the time, though officials doubt the activity contributed to the collapse. One researcher noted the building had been built on reclaimed wetlands and had been slowly sinking by roughly two millimeters per year.

A Tentative Deal

President Joe Biden said yesterday he had agreed in principle​ to a bipartisan infrastructure package. The deal has a total price tag of $1.2T over eight years, with roughly $579B in new spending ($20B repurposed from COVID-19 stimulus spending). Twenty-one senators, 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats, have publicly signed on to the deal.

Full details of the proposal have yet to be released, but the plan reportedly includes $312B in roads and bridges, $66B for rail projects, and $49B for public transit. A reported $73B is set aside for the power grid, $65B to expand broadband, and $55B for water. 

The announcement came with one caveat—Biden said he wouldn't sign the bill unless a separate budget reconciliation deal containing a number of administration priorities was passed. See details on how the deal got done here.

Residential School Reckoning

At least 751 unmarked graves were discovered on the grounds of a former residential school in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The revelation follows the discovery of the bodies of at least 215 children buried in mass graves at a similar school in Western Canada in May. 

Canada's residential school system was a government-backed network of mandatory boarding schools meant to aggressively assimilate children of Indigenous communities into Canadian culture. The schools operated from the 1870s to the late 1990s, with more than 150,000 children passing through the system. Between 3,000 and 6,000 children are believed to have died at the schools over the years, with officials omitting their deaths from the official record and allegedly disposing of bodies in unmarked mass graves. 

The discoveries have ramped up pressure on the Canadian government to search the grounds of all former schools.
