Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has been adamant National Institutes of Health grants did not fund gain-of-function research [which improves the ability of a pathogen to spread in order to study it] at the Wuhan lab but has also admitted he doesn’t actually know what the secretive Chinese lab has been up to.

Paul brought up a 2017 paper co-authored by Wuhan lab virologist Shi Zhengli and other Chinese scientists, saying that “she took two bat coronavirus genes and combined them with a SARS-related backbone to create new viruses that are not found in nature.” The paper noted it received funding from the NIH [and other Chinese science institutes].

“Dr. Fauci, as you are aware, it is a crime to lie to Congress. [...] On your last trip to our committee, on May 11, you stated that the NIH has not ever and has not now funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. And yet, gain-of-function research was done entirely at the Wuhan institute by Dr. Shi and was funded by the NIH,” [Paul said].
