On Wednesday, the latest installment of AD PRO’s Expert Eye webinar series explored the intersection of wellness, sustainability, and luxury in the home and kitchen, in a panel sponsored by Gaggenau. AD’s Global Features Director Sam Cochran led a discussion with designers Corey Damen Jenkins in New York City, May Sung in Pacific Palisades, California, Charlie Hellstern in Seattle, and Los Angeles-based Peti Lau—who called in from a yoga retreat in Mexico!

Just what, exactly, does wellness signify when it comes to design? “Coming out of the pandemic, we have a renewed appreciation for emotional and mental health,” Corey stated. “Wellness means good mental and emotional sustainability.” May agreed with that sentiment, and also highlighted the importance of finding balance. “Wellness is being able to have that ‘ahh’ moment,” she added.

On the subject of sustainability, Peti suggested that investing in things that stand the test of time isn’t just worthwhile, but joyful. She drinks her morning coffee from a 1920s cup that just makes her happy. And Charlie pointed out that personal comfort is the ultimate luxury these days, noting that it’s important to go beyond the aesthetics and fashion of the current moment.

Corey summed it all up when he observed that recent events have “cured us of the need to re-do our spaces unnecessarily. We design things to endure now. Mixing vintage pieces with great functional items—to me, that’s sustainable.”
