β Snippets to Send You on Your Way
β
π· More money to buy up e-commerce brands: The global push to raise capital, buy e-commerce brands and unify them under a single umbrella is a huge area of investment. The new kid on the block is Suma Brands, which has $150 million to execute acquisitions. The new capital is mostly debt.
β
π· Failing in responsibility: The worldβs 10 leading venture capital firms have, together, invested over $150 billion in technology startups. And, almost all of them lack adequate human rights due diligence policies and processes.
β
π· Crowdfunding's future: Kickstarter announced last week that backers have pledged $6 billion to more than 200,000 projects over the course of the crowdfunding siteβs history. TechCrunch sat down with Kickstarter CEO, Aziz Hasano, to discuss the past year, the companyβs big milestone and the future of crowdfunding.
β
π· Extra pennies: Cent, the platform that Jack Dorsey used to sell his first tweet as an NFT, just raised $3M. Centβs San Francisco-based team created Valuables, an NFT market for tweets, which was propelled into the limelight after Dorsey's sale.
β
π· Refurbed closed on $54M: Vienna-based marketplace for refurbished electronics Refurbed has raised $54 million in a Series B funding round. Refurbed is addressing the significant environmental impact of the electronics industry by putting more usable tech back out into the market. Since its launch in 2017 the company states it has saved 170 tons worth of electronic devices.
β
π· Bye, bye: The number of Americans who renounced their citizenship in favor of a foreign country hit an all-time high in 2020: 6,707, a 237% increase over 2019.While the numbers are down this year, that's probably because many U.S. embassies and consulates remain closed for COVID-19.
The people who depart tend to be ultra-wealthy, with many of them seeking to reduce their tax burden. (Only the U.S. and Eritrea tax people based on citizenship rather than residency).
