3-2-1: Tips on staying employed, Github moves us to the future and 7 high value ideas on career & life

Hello my friends.

Let's kick off this week with 3 hand-picked articles from the tech world, 2 web development guides, and 1 best Tweet of the week.

🔥 Picks From The Tech World

1. An Old Hacker's Tips On Staying Employed

One of the best guides on how to secure your job and make sure you never get fired I've read.

I won't write a TL;DR version here, it's just impossible. But here are these old hacker's tips without context:

  1. Develop Your Personal Brand
  2. Make Your Boss Afraid
  3. Make Your Boss Happy
  4. The “Do It Anyway” Principle
  5. The “Two-And-Done” Rule (my favorite)

2. Tap to Navigate

An interesting UX guide about systemizing interactive map labels, like on image below.

If your project uses maps (and labels on it), this article is a must-read for you.

3. GitHub’s Engineering Team has moved to Codespaces

The title says it best, they moved to Codespacese, a Visual Studio Code backed by high-performance VMs that start in seconds.

What's cool about it? This moves the whole industry in the direction of a cloud environment. And what's cool about the cloud environment? For example this:

"In the early stages of our Codespaces migration, we used 8 core, 16 GB RAM VMs. Those machines were sufficient, but GitHub.com runs a network of different services and will gladly consume every core and nibble of RAM we’re willing to provide. So we moved to 32 core, 64 GB RAM VMs. By changing a single line of configuration, we upgraded every engineer’s machine."

For a full list of benefits of the cloud environment Codespaces and what you can achieve with it, check out the press release.

⚡️ Web Development Guides

1. HTTP/3 From A To Z: Core Concepts (Part 1)

After almost five years in development, the new HTTP/3 protocol is nearing its final form. Earlier iterations were already available as an experimental feature, but you can expect the availability and use of HTTP/3 proper to ramp up over in 2021. So what exactly is HTTP/3? Why was it needed so soon after HTTP/2? How can or should you use it? And especially, how does it improve web performance? Find out in the article.

2. The World of CSS Transforms

A great interactive guide on CSS transforms by Joshua Comeau.

🦚 Tweet of The Week

Tweet of the week goes to Shreyas Doshi. I love that this thread consists of 7 ideas that have never (or rarely) been mentioned before.

My favorite: "In complex environments, Problem Solving is a misnomer. Solving one problem creates another set of problems. Problem Solving is in reality Problem Trading. A leader’s job is not to eliminate all problems. It is to wisely pick what problems we are willing to live with."

🎉 Bonus

I found a crazy, awkward and funny story on Quora of how Steve Jobs interviewed one engineer in late 2003. If you’ll be interviewed like this, make sure to enjoy the ride!

You can read the full story here.
