In this week’s newsletter: thinking about seeds, loneliness, Prince, and more...

Hey y’all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. I made a zine about seeds.

  2. I wrote about the harmful effects of fame, how we can’t stand famous people complaining about being famous, and “the indignity of being observed.” (Somewhat related: I also wrote about pseudonyms.)

  3. These can be lonely times, and Kristen Radtke’s Seek You: A Journey Through American Loneliness was the right book at the right time for me. (Made me want to re-read Olivia Laing’s The Lonely City and pick up Sherry Turkle’s Alone Together.) I’m now a big fan of Radtke’s work, and I look forward to reading her first book, Imagine Wanting Only This

  4. My phone recognized some of Radtke’s drawings as faces, and that sent me down a rabbit hole of comics and facial recognition.

  5. One of my favorite writers, Mary Ruefle, is having an art show of her whiteout poetry. (See also: Luc Sante on Jim Jarmusch’s Some Collages.)

  6. I tore through official Prince archivist Duane Tudahl’s second volume of Prince’s recording sessions and made a Spotify playlist of most of the tracks the Purple One recorded from 1985-1986, a lot of which were featured on the Sign O’ The Times deluxe reissue. (Tudahl’s volume about the Purple Rain sessions inspired endless plays of that super deluxe collection and another playlist and made my favorite reads of 2018.) I’ve also been listening to the second season of the official Prince podcast.

  7. My crew loved the Shaun The Sheep movie, which approached Paddington 2 levels of greatness, and made me want to watch everything made by Aardman Animations.

  8. Reservation Dogs was one of the best debut seasons of TV I’ve seen in a while.

  9. RIP actor Michael K. Williams. RIP actor Jean-Paul Belmondo. RIP former Magnetic Fields singer Susan Anway.

  10. Andy Warhol’s advice to Iggy Pop: “Why don’t you sing the newspaper?
Thanks for reading. This newsletter is free, but not cheap. You can help it keep going: forward it to someone who’d like it, read my books, shop for some of my favorite gear (I get a cut), buy a t-shirt, or hire me to speak.

If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can read previous issues and subscribe here.
