After the spectacle of the VMAs red carpet on Sunday, maybe it was inevitable that the Americana-themed Met Gala would wind up feeling a little underwhelming. A lot of celebs opted for the Old Hollywood take on the theme — host Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, Kendall Jenner, and roughly 97% of the men, who mostly wore simple black tuxes. There were, somehow, even more naked dresses. J. Lo arrived in a cowboy hat and feathered bolero, which seemed like a missed opportunity for Kacey Musgraves. Naomi Osaka, another host, paid homage to her (and America’s) multicultural heritage in a Louis Vuitton look her sister helped design, and Ciara donned a jersey-inspired dress. Even Rihanna, de facto queen of the Met Gala, showed up late in an all-black cape dress with boyfriend A$AP Rocky, who was wearing a quilt. Overall, giving everyone a B-.
