The simplest path to a Well Paid tech career in 2021

About a month ago now a wrote a Tweet that blew up quite nicely:

HTML & CSS => JavaScript => React => Get paid $$$

Although this sounds oversimplified, there is an important truth regarding well paid tech jobs that is contained in this snippet.

People always bemoan the laundry list of tech skills people ask for, but the truth is that it's not having a lot of skills that get you hired and well paid, but rather having deep experience in the *right* skills.

Whenever I get hired it's always for a good working knowledge of the above skills. It's what people look for and what they test me for in interviews.

There a loads of other relevant skills, but no one ever cares to much if I use them:

LESS
SASS
TailwindCSS
Gatsby
CI / CD Tools
WebDriverIO
GraphQL
TypeScript

The list goes on and on. When it comes to frontend web dev the core is:

  • HTML & CSS
  • JavaScript
  • React

If you don't know the core, you'll struggle.

If you're good at the core you'll only struggle to keep up with all the interview requests you're getting.

To really emphasise this point I got a linked in message from a dev lead today about a job. He said what he liked most about my profile was that I had experience of the web before any frameworks (front or backend) were clear winners. He said newer devs that learned a framework first approach ended up lacking a fundamental understanding of web technologies.

There are a couple of takeaways from this.

  1. Don't worry about learning a laundry list of technologies, if you're good at the basics you'll get a job
  2. Depth of knowledge is better than breadth of knowledge in most cases

This is why when I created my Learn JavaScript Step By Step course I focused on teaching both core JavaScript skills, and perhaps more importantly, core programming skills in great depth.

I could have made some sort of whistle stop tour of HTML / CSS / React and called it a web developer bootcamp or something, but that would be a waste of people's time and hard earned money.

Instead I created something that teaches must know core programming and JavaScript skills in depth. With over 100 video lectures and around a dozen practical exercises to test your skills, my learn JavaScript Step By Step course is right for anyone who really wants to master the core basics of the language. It's currently $20 off via this link, but only for the next 30 people: https://wellp.ai/20offoct21
