As the Great Resignation continues to gain steam (recent labor reports show that about 4.3 million people left their jobs in August alone), you may be wondering…“Should I leave, too?” Whether you’re daydreaming of rage quitting (see also: #quitmyjob on TikTok) or quietly applying to new jobs, there are compelling reasons to stay in your role, at least for now, according to C-suite coach and consultant Amii Barnard-Bahn.

Recently in the Harvard Business Review, Barnard-Bahn said that while “some workers may be fed up with their existing company’s toxic or unappreciative culture, inflexible work arrangements, or pay inequity,” if you generally like your workplace, perform well in your position, and have strong relationships with upper management, it may be to your advantage to stick it out.

I spoke with Lindsey Pollak, career expert and author of Recalculating: Navigate Your Career Through the Changing World of Work, for more clarity around why.

“I think we are in the ‘messy middle’ of the pandemic-led return-to-work experience, and it’s a challenging time, but also full of opportunities,” she said. “The people who do remain with their employers will have a lot of leverage.”

Yes, leverage is the word. If people on your team leave, your role becomes more critical. And you can use that as an opening to discuss a higher salary or better benefits, Pollak said. But you have to be strategic about it. “Put any request—for a raise, promotion, more responsibility...in terms of the benefit to the company,” she stressed. “Not, ‘I deserve a raise because I stayed,’ but ‘I've provided value through a tumultuous time by contributing x, y, and z and I'm eager to build toward the future here.’”
