Louder: After 40 Years, Abba Takes a Chance With Its Legacy

Plus: Ed Sheeran, Mary Lattimore, El Alfa and More

Abba ostensibly stopped being Abba in 1982, but the group as a global phenomenon has remained stubbornly persistent. Ten years after its hiatus began came “Abba Gold,” a compilation that remains on the British charts to this day. The 1999 jukebox musical “Mamma Mia!” became a smash 2008 movie. And all along the way, artists and critics began being more open and unabashed about their appreciation for the four Swedes who broke through at Eurovision in 1974 with “Waterloo.”

So when the quartet announced its return — a new album, and a “live” show starring high-tech digital avatars — I knew we had to dispatch our foremost Abba expert, Elisabeth Vincentelli, to Stockholm to find out why. Why risk adding to a beloved catalog? Why risk experimenting with a live format that hasn’t yielded impressive results thus far? Her story is our Arts & Leisure cover this week. (Read it in French or Spanish, too!)

Plus: Geese, a buzzy New York City post-punk band of teens; Mary Lattimore, a harpist who is upending stereotypes about her instrument; the latest album from Ed Sheeran, dissected; El Alfa, a dembow superstar, comes to Madison Square Garden; and of course, much more.
