A Day in the Life of a Crypto-Fueled Future
The year is 2030. You live in rural Montana in a cabin with your spouse and 3 children. You wake up, pour yourself a cup of hot coffee, and check your social networks to see what your favorite creators are up to. Your favorite funk band has launched a new NFT project -- limited edition album art-- to raise money for their upcoming album. You buy one, helping them rent a recording studio in SoHo, and earning a stake in their global streaming royalties and ticket sales. This is displayed in your crypto wallet (it’s just called a wallet now), so all of your friends can see the cool bands you support. Win-win. You need to get some work done, so you log onto a decentralized, ad hoc job board by connecting your wallet. There are tasks listed by category from companies and DAOs that are distributed around the world. You see a cool housing startup in France that needs someone with 5+ years of Solidity coding experience and a background in real estate. Perfect! You hit apply, and your wallet is scanned for the needed credentials and approved. The deliverable is a custom widget for their website, and you finish in six hours. You submit the project, it is approved by the company, and you are immediately paid directly to your wallet. Done. Time to relax! You work on your own time, so you decide to take the kids on a hike. You spend 3 hours soaking up the sun and breathing in that cool mountain air. After a great afternoon, you head home for family dinner, where you talk about the cool project you worked on this morning and your kids excitedly describe the deer they saw running through the woods. After dinner, you put the kids to bed, and decide to work on a passion project. You open up your computer again, and see messages from your two good friends who live in Australia and Chile. Together, you are building ScholarDAO, a decentralized organization that raises and distributes money for students around the world to have access to free education. Good news! A young student from Jakarta has just been accepted to an On Deck fellowship and applied for a scholarship. The members of the DAO vote to fund her fellowship, and you celebrate with your friends the remarkable difference you’ve made and the fun times you’ve had building the organization. Though you’ve never met in person, you consider these friendships just as important as any you have in the physical world. Time for bed. You spend some time catching up with your spouse and planning a date night for the weekend. You read a bit of your favorite novel, then head to sleep. You rest easy, knowing that tomorrow there will be another opportunity for fulfilling, well paid work, collaborative passion projects, and supporting the creators you care about. The end. This is a glimpse to the future of where web3 is taking us. While I’m fascinating about this direction, web3 is very much in “proof of concept mode”. We’ve got plenty of kinks to sort out like the clunky experience, gas fees, the environment and more. But, I’m certain this is the direction the internet is going. Hope you enjoy.
