Debugging Systems in the Cloud: MySQL, Kubernetes, and Cgroups

KateSQL is Shopify’s custom-built Database-as-a-Service platform, running on top of Google Cloud’s Kubernetes Engine (GKE), currently manages several hundred production MySQL instances across different Google Cloud regions and many GKE Clusters.

Using Propensity Score Matching to Uncover Shopify Capital’s Effect on Business Growth

Five years ago, we introduced Shopify Capital, our data-powered product that enables merchants to access funding from right within the Shopify platform. We built it using a version of a recurrent neural network (RNN)—analyzing more than 70 million data points across the Shopify platform to understand trends in merchants’ growth potential and offer cash advances that make sense for their businesses. To date, we’ve provided our merchants with over $2.7 billion in funding.

Empowering girls to be future technology leaders

Shopify’s Social Impact team will be supporting the Technovation Girls program for the 7th year–globally, with volunteer mentors, speakers, and judges! We support the program in Canada, Brazil, Germany, Ireland, the USA, and we’re adding the UK this year!

Technovation offers girls ages 8-18 the opportunity to learn skills needed to emerge as tech entrepreneurs and leaders anywhere in the world. Every year, girls identify problems in their community and are challenged to solve them by building businesses that utilize a mobile app or AI project they’ve created. They share their success through a pitch and demo video showcasing their product, the significance, and why they are passionate about the problem they selected. The videos are impressive!
