Deep-seated discomfort 🤢
Cryptocurrency prices have struggled to hold their footing over the last 24 hours despite some of the industry's top executives getting a chance to defend crypto on the national stage (see below for details).

The bitcoin price has traded sideways since this time yesterday, with fresh fears over China's embattled property giant Evergrande weighing on markets. Ethereum rivals Binance's BNB and terra's luna are leading the major crypto market higher, climbing 3% and 5% respectively, while ethereum itself has moved slightly higher.

Meanwhile, XRP is soaring, once more nudging $1, after its developer Ripple announced it's joining a non-profit foundation looking to develop a U.K. digital pound and Bitfury and former U.S. regulator Brian Brookes defended XRP in its ongoing legal battle with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) when speaking before lawmakers (you can see his comments here).

Taking the stand: Some of the biggest names in crypto appeared before Congress yesterday to make the case for blockchain technology and defend the sector that's been accused of being rife with scams, fraud and theft. You can watch it here.

By the numbers: The hearing lasted four hours and 49 minutes, according to Coindesk's live blog, which counted questions from almost 40 lawmakers who asked questions "ranging from specifics about stablecoin backing or certain details to broader questions about use cases in the sector."

One rule for you... The executives (Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire, FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, Bitfury CEO Brian Brooks, Paxos CEO Charles Cascarilla, Stellar Development Foundation CEO Denelle Dixon and Coinbase chief financial officer Alesia Haas) called for bespoke regulation rather than forcing the industry to comply with existing financial rules—which they claim will push the market overseas.

But but but... Democratic Representative Maxine Waters, who chairs the House of Representatives

Committee on Financial Services, singled out the social media giant Facebook's plans to launch a stablecoin on its platforms as a major concern due its global reach.

Key quotes: "Without tailored legislative solutions that are openly debated with public participation, the United States risks unnecessarily onerous and chilling laws and regulations," said Coinbase chief financial officer Alesia Haas.

With great potential... "The industry has the potential to improve a lot of people’s lives," FTX chief executive Sam Bankman-Fried told lawmakers in comments reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Fans and foes... "I am tremendously impressed. I see a lot of ingenuity, a lot of entrepreneurial spirit. "We need to be supportive of you," Representative Pete Sessions, a Texas Republican, was quoted by Reuters. On the other side... "Most of the people that I know that have invested in cryptocurrencies (have done so)...because they think they can get rich quick," said Representative Juan Vargas. "We've seen this before, unfortunately, and it led to the financial crisis."

The bottom line: New U.S. crypto rules will be a long time coming and yesterday's hearing was primarily a fact-finding exercise but highlighted the need for the U.S. to catch up with other countries around the world if it wants to remain competitive in crypto.

Crypto dominates on Reddit... ⬆️🗳️
🌊 Reddit, always an important hub for the crypto community, was flooded with posts and comments about bitcoin and crypto this year.

🔥 "Cryptocurrency" was found to be the most popular theme on the link-sharing site, topping its list of most viewed topics of 2021.

✍️ "In 2021, there were a lot of conversations on Reddit, but none more prominent than cryptocurrency," the site wrote in a post breaking down its 2021 recap. "For more than 10 years, Reddit has been home to over 500 cryptocurrency communities. As more redditors participate in conversation, whether it be for information, help, or to share major successes, Reddit continues to be the hub for cryptocurrency enthusiasts."

🔍 Two cryptocurrency search terms made the global top ten in Google's Year in Search 2021 news category—with "dogecoin" the fourth most searched news term this year and "ethereum price" the 10th.

📈 "AMC stock" and "GME stock" both made the top five in the news category as meme stock-madness swept the world early in the year.
