Officials said six people died at the site, and one person was airlifted to a regional hospital. The 1.1 million-square-foot delivery station opened in July 2020 and employs about 190 people across multiple shifts, according to Amazon. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is launching an investigation into the warehouse collapse.

Worker rights groups also said Amazon’s apparent ban on workers using cell phones while at warehouses [limited] workers’ access to outside information and contact with loved ones. [An Amazon spokesperson] said employees and drivers are allowed to have their cell phones.
    ...
Aris Papadopoulos, chairman of the Resilience Action Fund, said the minutes between when the alarm was issued and when the tornado struck provided “plenty of time” for businesses to act promptly. Reports indicate that there was some confusion at the site. “That leads me to believe that perhaps the training and safety task assessments [...] may have not been observed as they should be,” Papadopoulos said.

Should private citizens enforce a ban on assault rifles as proposed in California?

550 votes, 83 comments

Context: California governor proposes enforcing gun control laws via lawsuits from private citizens.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - "Assault weapon" is a meaningless term, conjured up with the express purpose of eliciting emotive reactions. If it means a black rifle, generally, with a magazine - e.g. AR15 - then it is intended to ban the most widely held rifle in the U.S. If they were particularly and uniquely dangerous one would find many examples of crimes and accidents given their prevalence. But one doesn't. Instead you find that small details (e.g. bayonet lug or connecting point) [...] are used in definitions that are easily misinterpreted in order to artificially control sale and ownership.
