Sen. Manchin not backing Dems’ $2T bill, potentially dooming it.
Associated Press (Center) • Factual Grade 76% • 5 min read

Manchin said he was opposing the 10-year, roughly $2 trillion bill because of his concerns about inflation, growing federal debt and a need to focus on the omicron variant. Democrats note that CBO estimated the bill’s savings would leave it adding $200 billion to federal deficits over the coming decade, small compared to the $12 trillion in red ink projected.
    ...
The bill would provide hundreds of billions of dollars to help millions of families with children by extending a more generous child tax credit, creating free preschool and bolstering child care aid. There is more than $500 billion for tax breaks and spending aimed at curbing carbon emissions. Other provisions would limit prescription drug price increases.
    ...
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement that Manchin had “in person” given Biden a written proposal last Tuesday that was “the same size and scope” of a framework for the bill that Democrats rallied behind in October, and agreed he’d continue talks. That framework had a 10-year cost of $1.85 trillion.

Should standardized tests be required for college admissions?

440 votes, 60 comments

Context: Harvard University drops SAT/ACT requirement for applicants.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - The complaints about costs and test prep disadvantage are legitimate, but schools are throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Instead, we need less of a monopoly on standardized testing, and schools should waive their admissions fees. And most importantly if you actually care about discrimination, schools need to get rid of legacy and donor-preference admissions.

No - As a multi-decade educator, I know the tests are not accurate predictors if success. They measure a student’s ability to perform well in a certain...

Unsure - Even as an educator, I’m uncertain. On the one hand, college admittance exams are a racket at best. There is so muc...
