You really, really want your 2-year-old to go to sleep. Or for your teenager to do the dishes. Or for yourself to do those 30-minute daily runs you’ve been promising yourself. Why does it have to be “easier said than done”?

In other words, in our personal and work lives, how can we incentivize ‘desired behavior’? What can the right incentives tell us about how we learn? Do we learn from experience, by following the well-trodden paths of those that came before us? Should we always do as others do, or forge ahead on our own? And, when it’s time for us to pass on our own knowledge (to peers, clients, students…), what’s the best method?

There are lots of learning theories, tips, and hacks out there for inching our way towards learning and behaving in the way we want. It might take some experimenting—Pavlov and his dogs, anyone?—but we’ll get there, in the end.
