The Web3 Evolution and How It Can Help Creators Today
You've heard the term “Web3.” But what does that mean? More importantly, how can entrepreneurs and creators take advantage of it?
The internet is being steadily rebuilt on a foundation of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. The result is a slow-motion overthrow of entrenched financial interests such as Wall Street, Silicon Valley, and central banking. Expect pushback.
Through a form of cryptography, it transfers control and decision-making from a centralized organization onto a distributed network. It allows the loosening of the stranglehold that companies and governments have over everything from information and intellectual property to the creation of money. Among the highlights for creators:
Tokens: Blockchain-based smart contracts have created new currencies, new asset classes, and new forms of property. They are secured by math rather than law. Content creators can now be empowered by a type of cryptocurrency called social tokens. Creative folks can essentially issue a currency tied to their community.
Monetizing: Social tokens or coins enable creators to build and reward their community and compensate themselves. Such coins can also be used to tip creators for their content. This option creates something far better than "likes" for creators – actual money.
Now, creators don’t have to rely on ads to monetize their content; they can monetize directly from creator coins and indirectly from their audience donating coins to them.
Finance: Rather than joining a bank, in Web3, you are the bank. You can access financial products directly through a digital wallet – no need for any asset managers. Assets will move to digital coins that represent equity. Compliance will be built-in due to the technology.
Artists, writers, and other creators already are paid in real time, with royalties flowing directly to digital wallets. Web3 makes it possible to create new assets that are hard to define, such as the never-ending tickets introduced for The Tilt’s CEX event.
And more: At present, blockchain shows exactly how it will shape new forms of property, asset creation and organizations. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have emerged as a way to turn items of value into investments. Decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) are being created where investors make the decisions and most likely don’t know each other, such as the ConstitutionDAO that recently came together to bid $40M on a rare copy of the U.S. Constitution. If anything, Meta’s (formerly Facebook) pivot to the metaverse has proven big money is already shifting towards virtual-world assets.
Regardless of how things develop, Web3 is the future of the internet. The term sounds simple, yet the changes this convergence of innovative technologies, such as decentralized data networks, artificial intelligence, and open-source programming will bring are massive. The opportunity is too.

Canada-Traveling Couple Earns $100,000 in Sponsored Content in 2021
Make a pitch: Don’t just ask brands to do deals; create a pitch tailored to what your content business will provide and how they will benefit.
Create around your strengths: Must Do Canda isn’t just one person’s perspective. It’s a collaboration between a husband who is native to the country and a wife who is a non-native but living in Canada.
Publish regularly: The duo publishes a structured newsletter every Wednesday so their audience knows when and what to expect.

10 ’grammers: Instagram is testing its paid subscriber feature with 10 creators in the U.S. Subscribers will get a special badge and access to the creator’s exclusive live videos and Stories. Price points range from 99 cents to $99.99 a month. (Tech Crunch; h/t Matt Navarra) Tilt Take:Testing with 10 is a teeny, tiny sample size, yet Instagram is getting big headlines. It seems like a lot of hype for not a lot of opportunities for creators now.
$10M venture: Workweek Capital launched a $10M creator-led venture fund. “It gives new opportunities to the "middle class" of creators looking to reach the next level and helps established creators avoid the pain of raising a fund.” (Adam Ryan of Workweek) Tilt Take:Creators can gain more from their expertise with this type of opportunity. It’s a new model that we’re very interested in.
Audiences
Answer them: Improve your Twitter engagement by posting valuable replies to others’ tweets. What’s valuable? Complementary info, supportive remark, or a witty reply (but if you’re not funny, keep that joke to yourself.) (Amanda Natividad) Tilt Take:You should engage with others if you expect others to engage with you.
Wait a sec: Before you respond to criticism, take a pause. Collect your thoughts and form a measured, less-reactionary response. Oh, and realize you don’t have to respond at all and feed the trolls. (Josh Spector) Tilt Take:We’ll add one more reason to pause. Think about how engaging a critic could affect your well-being. If the impact would be negative, resist the urge to reply.
Tech and Tools
Hexagon cool: Twitter profiles with those hexagon-shaped profile pics indicate it’s an authentic NFT. The new option is available for Twitter Blue subscribers who use an iOS device. (The Verge) Tilt Take:If your target audience is interested in the creator space, this type of profile pic can be a valuable visual indicator that you are too.
Remix expansion: Instagram creators can now remix any video on the app. Any public videos published beginning this month are fair game. (Tech Crunch; h/t tl;dr marketing) Tilt Take:If you collaborate with influencers in your niche on remixes, you likely can expand your audience.
And Finally
I write a newsletter: LinkedIn newsletter creators can add that to their profiles now in the featured section. (LinkedIn) Tilt Take:Always look for easy and relevant opportunities like this to promote your content.
No prank: All 10K of Nelks’ Full Send NFT collection sold out in 10 minutes. The creators known for partying, pranks, and irreverent hijinks saw their NFT holders resell about 4.4K on the secondary market within 24 hours, averaging a 60% return on the inaugural holders’ investment. (tubefilter) Tilt Take:Strong NFT sales like that usually require the creation of a strong audience long before the launch. Nelk’s YouTube channel boasts 7.2M subscribers.
we're a stan for Maya Washington
Maya Washington set out to answer this question: What would happen if I shamelessly self-promote myself for 365 days?
Back in 2012, the then New York City-based photographer, writer, and actress committed to tweeting 10 times a day, publishing four blog entries a week, creating three daily Tumbles, uploading three Instagram posts, and doing one YouTube video a week.
After that first year, she slowly turned from promotional to lifestyle content, uploading videos on fashion, beauty, health, fitness, and the latest tech gadgets to her 1.2M subscribers and 276K Instagram followers. Months ago, she began creating content with her partner Max on their shared YouTube channel (37.3K) in his home country of Sweeden.
Why we’re a Stan: As Maya’s self-promotion garnered traction, she cleverly turned it into a brand that combines her original experiment with her lifestyle content – Shameless Maya.
