U.S. officials limit treatments that don’t work on Omicron, but doctors say alternatives are scarce. [Free read link]

The F.D.A. said that it was limiting the emergency use authorizations of the Regeneron and Eli Lilly antibody treatments to say the infusions should not be used now, with Omicron dominant [at 99.5% of all new cases]. During a wave driven by Delta, those medications were effective at keeping infected people out of the hospital. As Omicron emerged, it became apparent that the treatments would not neutralize the virus.
    ...
Federal officials were rebuked by Republican governors saying they could still help some patients with the Delta variant. That has become an increasingly shaky position, given the difficulty most doctors have in figuring out which variant each patient has.
    ...
Since then, one monoclonal antibody treatment by GlaxoSmithKline and Vir Biotechnology has remained effective against Omicron, though doctors have said it is in short supply. Options for the early treatment of Covid continue to expand. On Friday, the F.D.A. approved the use of remdesivir for outpatients.

Race or ethnicity should be a __ factor in college admissions.

644 votes, 92 comments

Context: Supreme Court agrees to hear two cases concerning use of race in college admissions.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Irrelevant - By making it a factor we are assuming that some races or ethnicities are less capable of reaching the same achievements. We are also lowering standards of colleges instead of raising the education level of applicants. Applications should be anonymous and should reflect the potential student’s capabilities, potential and motivation. There are other ways to promote equity: Promote equitable quality of elementary and high school education regardless of zip code, provide financial help for those who do not have the means to participate in colleges, offer free or low-cost preparatory programs for college, and more.

Minor - If you have 5 spots and 10 people equally qualified on merit to fill, diversity factors should come into p...
