Issue #348 - Understanding FinTech: From The Elon Effect To Klarna’s Physical Card

2022-01-26

In this number of FinTech Weekly we focus on the two-fold nature of financial technology. While fintech is changing the way we consider the financial system and reduces the number of unbanked people around the world, the other side of the coin is that fintech - especially when it comes to blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies - can be a good space for those who look for hyped markets and easy profits. The Elon Effect demonstrates this: a Twitter joke between the CEO of Tesla and McDonald’s made a meme coin jump 285,000% in less than 24 hours. At the same time, fintech platforms like Tink and data providers like Enigma are improving lending possibilities for users, and DeFi is helping people to get the financial instruments and opportunities that they wouldn’t have otherwise. We will cover this and other fintech news in detail with our fintech numbers: stay tuned!

McDonald’s, via its official Twitter account, responded that they will accept DOGE if Tesla accepts Grimacecoin. The result? A newly created meme coin inspired by the mascot of McDonald’s jumped 285,000% in less than one day.
