HIV Vax Hits Trials
Overview
- Trials have begun for an mRNA vaccine that would prevent HIV/AIDS
- Moderna, the company behind one of the major C-19 vaccines, has developed it
- The company believes mRNA technology will allow the vaccine to work against a range of HIV variants. Largely because of HIV's high mutation rate, decades of research have not produced a vaccine for it
- An estimated 38M people are currently living with HIV/AIDS, including 1.2M in the US. In some countries in southern Africa, where the disease is most prevalent, more than 1 in 5 adults have the disease
DIG DEEPER
This initial trial is small, looking at only 56 HIV-negative Americans. The goal is to prove the vaccine's safety and the validity of the idea behind it. Initial results are expected next year.

Yesterday's Poll:
Do you believe that Barry Bonds should be in the Hall of Fame?
Yes: 63.1%
No: 39.9%
Yesterday's Question:
What's an underappreciated profession? Why?
Kismet from Portland: "9*1*1 Dispatchers. They talk to people on the worst day of their lives and absorb the pain. They hear officers and firefighters yelling for them to send help. They coordinate the chaos of riots and mayhem. Then they move on to the next emergency."
Jenney from Kentucky: "Sanitation workers. I thank the trash guys every time I see them in my neighborhood. What would we do without them???"
Julia from London: "Kindergarten teachers. Seriously. So many problems in the world because kids grew up in dysfunctional settings. We can't fix all parents, but we can at least try to ensure kids have great adults around them at kindergarten/pre school for those first crucial years of their lives."

General Feedback:
Micah from Massachusetts: "Love the newsletter! Always some super interesting content you don't see elsewhere"
On yesterday's Wrap, Elisha from West Chester: "This is both interesting and terrifying. What a dilemma. I think one could get a tranquilizer gun or gas the area (non lethal) and move them away. This is one of my favorite stories. Pure gold. I mean this could be a movie (scary one). Monkey business for real. :-) "

― Final Thoughts
Happy Friday, Riders! If you're in the eastern US, stay warm and load up on marshmallows. Whether it's for chilly weather in Miami or a foot of snow in Boston, you'll need it.
If you're in London, where it's looking like 56ºF (13ºC) and sun, soak up the vitamin D (hoping it seeps through clouds...) while you have the chance.
And for the Riders in Australia, where Sydney is expecting a Saturday of 73º (23º) sun, do something for those of us who will be snowed in: Hit the beach, take a jog, eat dinner outside, throw some shrimp on the barbie. We just ask that you keep your northern hemisphere Riders in mind.
Have great weekends, all. See you on Monday.
-Max and Max
