My friend Jason Falls on his Winfluence podcast (episode 21) talked about how grownups shouldn't laugh and dismiss kids' desires to become influencers.

Jason points out in the episode that a lot has changed in the last couple of years and letting your kids explore their creativity online and gain a following has become more accepted and even a viable business model.

I understand it to some degree, being an "elder" millennial myself, but it does take time to get one's head around the idea and accept that the times are changing.

Jason writes in the show notes:

An online content creator, or influencer if you will, is a skilled craftsperson whose earning potential in today’s world far exceeds that of most of the jobs these kid’s parents have. To laugh at them and dismiss that career path because we think it’s short-sighted and foolish, only exposes us as being short-sighted and foolish.

This really hit home for me. My 9-year-old son wants to share his Minecraft escapades on YouTube. He also wants to blog and, for a moment, wanted to do a podcast.

I'm all about him creating and wanting to share it with the world. But the "elder" part of my millennialism kicks in and really wants him to do something more traditional. Granted he's only nine and isn't, as of now, allowed to post on YouTube. But eventually that's going to change and I guess I'll have to be down with it.

Web Finds Of The Week

  • Sparktoro holds office hours monthly on Crowdcast and then posts them on YouTube. The latest was about how to turn visitors into buyers with customer research and good copy. Amanda Natividad of Sparktoro does a great job with this interview. Make sure you have a notepad handy because you'll need it.
  • I was doubtful when I first clicked on this article. I mean how accurate could these trends be for 2022? Well, going through them, I predict, and you can hold me to this, that most of these trends will come true. I especially like the one about fact checking becoming cool again. Thank goodness.
  • It wouldn't be right not include Mark Schaefer in this weeks web finds. Mark is right that iterating slowly with your marketing is going to make it so your competition, who is iterating quicky, leaves you in the dust. This is a quick post with actionable advice. A must read.
  • An interesting post from a person who has been doing newsletters for mor than 35 years. It's a quick read and well worth your time. CJ breaks down why newsletters work and why they are a good medium to reach people.
  • So, podcast by the hilarious and extremely knowledgeable Jason Falls is in response to another funny and very smart podcaster Tanner Campbell. It all started with a Twitter poll that I put out asking "Is Podcasting A Form Of Busking." So this "mock" throw-down is my fault. Both of them weighed in on different sides on Twitter, they both took to the podcasting airwaves to debate it. What ensued is nothing more than amazing audio. Here's a link to Tanner's pro-podcasting-is-busking episode, I'd suggest listening to this first then Jason's. Ugh! What have I done? 😜
  • I'm not an introvert by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have some social anxiety, which always seems to perplex me. Mark Metry, is a very well known networker and mental health advocate on LinkedIn. In his latest LinkedIn newsletter he gives some great advice on how to network in a post 2020-world.

Marketing With Empathy Podcast by Sarah Panus Album Art

Another great show on the Marketing Podcast Network is Marketing With Empathy with Sara Panus. Like most podcasts on the network, Sarah's show is about... wait for it... marketing. But it's her energy and enthusiasm for the topics she covers that makes the show great. You know how people say you can tell when people are smiling by the way their voice sounds? This is the case with Sarah, she's definitely smiling throughout the show. Sarah covers so many marketing topics, you're bound to find stuff in each episode you want to listen to. Give it a listen. Like always, you'll be happy you did.
