How Covid-Testing Swabs Made Stefania Triva A Billionaire | Meet America’s Top Female Wealth Advisors | And More

Have you been watching the Olympics? I confess: I’ve forgotten to tune in more than a few times over the past week, but with the blessings of modern technology (a DVR and Twitter replays, mainly), I’ve caught up on most of the big moments.

I’m thrilled for last night’s victors (
Chloe Kim and Nathan Chen) and while I missed Eileen Gu’s gold-medal freeski “big air” run, I’ll be curious to see what business decisions she makes after the Games. Gu already works with brands like Tiffany, Fendi and Gucci, and as an American skier who competed for China, she can now count on endorsement from both sides of the Pacific, marketing experts told Forbes

And of course, like so many others, I’ve been heartbroken for Mikaela Shiffrin. The 26-year-old skier entered the Olympic Games still grieving the loss of her father, in recovery from a back injury and
shouldering expectations and pressures that Shiffrin herself likened to what Simone Biles faced in the summer games. Shiffrin was disqualified from her first two events this week, a development that’s only shocking if you forget that athletes are people and not robots.

As of now, it looks like Shiffrin will race in the Super-G on Friday. I’ll be rooting for her to do well, but more importantly, I’m rooting for her to
be well—which is far more important than her individual medal count.

Cheers!
Maggie

Featured Forbes Profile: Meet The Family-Owned Company That Invented Swabs For Covid Tests

Swabs for Covid testing made Copan CEO Stefania Triva a billionaire. But, despite countless buyout offers, she’s snubbing the dealmakers and keeping the company firmly in the family. “We love being free, eclectic and fast, knowing that we sometimes need to take calculated risks,” she says.

ICYMI: Stories From The Week

Forbes released its 6th annual list of America’s top female wealth advisors, a collection of financial experts who collectively manage $1.9 trillion in assets. Read the state-by-state breakdown of these advisers here.

Forbes also released its annual list of highest-paid entertainers this week, and while there’s no questioning the talent of the folks in the top spots (Peter Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and Jay-Z are No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively), there’s also no denying that this male-dominated ranking is emblematic of the wider pay disparity that exists in Hollywood and beyond.

Speaking of celebrities: Grammy-nominated artist
Camila Cabello announced her first major venture investment this week, participating in sparkling drink Olipop’s $30 million Series B round of funding. Other A-list investors in the drink include Mindy Kaling, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the Jonas Brothers and Gwenyth Paltrow.

A self-driving upstart is looking to disrupt the disruptors: Led by founder and CEO
Raquel Urtasun, the Toronto-based Waabi says its advanced new simulator can train autonomous vehicles to handle a nearly limitless number of road conditions–and do so faster than bigger self-driving rivals that rely more on road tests.

The publishing world is notorious for its lack of diversity, with one recent study finding that
only 5% of roles in publishing—including staff, reviewers, and agents—are Black. For more than 20 years, Dawn Michelle Hardy, “the Literary Lobbyist,” has been working to shift the industry. This is her story.
