New Hampshire State Senator Mike Sylvia along with six co-sponsors recently introduced a legislative resolution proposing an amendment to their states’ constitution that would declare New Hampshire to be a sovereign nation independent of the United States. Intrigued by the possibility of escaping the insanity of the radical left, I contacted Senator Sylvia to ask a few questions about New Hampshire secession. He told me that from his perspective “the body in D.C. is far from the government formed under the U.S. Constitution.” Beyond that he also referred me to the leading expert on New Hampshire secession, Liberty Block author and publisher Elliot Axelman, who thoughtfully lays out the grievances that warrant secession with his article 92 Reasons New Hampshire Should Divorce DC. But can this actually be done? Can New Hampshire legally secede from the United States? Pressed on that issue, Senator Sylvia quickly pointed out that Part I, Articles 7 (State Sovereignty) and 10 (Right of Revolution) of the New Hampshire State Constitution explicitly provide an option for exit from the Union. So yes, New Hampshire can leave the Union if its citizens choose to do so. The federal government is likely to see things a bit differently, but a departure from the United States would be in accordance with New Hampshire state law. But can other states do the same?

The Case for Widespread Secession

The United States of America is organically separating into two parallel societies. The radical leftists don’t want to live in our normal society. And we certainly don’t want to live in their Marxist society. Our current course is unsustainable. The political convulsions that have been swinging our federal government from the far left to the relatively normal then to the radical left will not much longer be endured. At what point do we realize that arguing our differences is futile? Neither side will ever convince the other. Secession though, at least at this present time, would most certainly be opposed by the federal government regardless of it being sanctioned by any state. Even states such as New Hampshire with constitutions that stipulate an option for secession would be met with an overwhelming federal opposition supported by a United States Constitution that makes no mention of states’ rights to secede. This, however, can be changed. It would take a lot of work and would require mass popular support, but it could be done. Through approval of three fourths of the state legislatures the U.S. Constitution could be amended to include a provision that would allow states to secede from the Union. Doing so wouldn’t be an insurrection. It wouldn’t be an armed revolt. Instead, it would be a common sense solution to a problem that is only worsening; the problem of a splitting society. Secession would be a solution designed to keep the peace rather than continuing with our current descent into what can only become increasing anarchy.

The Leftists Should Love it!

The radical left wants control of the entire country. But that’s not going to happen. We will never let that happen. A secession of the normal, however, would leave the Marxists with what’s left of the country so that they can construct their utopian, communist society without us there to save them from themselves. And they would get exactly what they deserve. They could import all the illegals they want. They could give them the vote too. They could have their own gay, transgender society under their official rainbow, national flag. They could have abortion beyond the womb and up through the first grade. They could drive around in their electric cars while their communist Chinese counterparts continue to pump unmitigated soot into the atmosphere. They can have their racist, critical race theory along with their other Marxist ideologies taught in their schools just to make sure that their children grow up to be just as screwed up as them. They could appoint all of their leaders based on race, gender and transgender rather than on ability. They could decriminalize criminality. They could outlaw guns while leaving guns in the hands of outlaws. They could shoot each other up with all the experimental medications they want. Universal income for all. Their socialist utopia at last! They could have it all without any pushback from us normal people. It seems to me that they would be happy to be rid of us. And we would certainly be happy to be rid of them.
