Happy Friday, Roca Riders. Today we learned the comforting news that both Tim Cook and we will make under $100M this year (more below). Who cares that his pay is slotted at $99M and ours roughly $99M less? But if Tim wants to make $100M this year, he can always set up a boxing PPV with Zuck.

It's a 3-day weekend, so get ready to have some fun – starting now with a new 20 Questions theme. Have a great weekend!

Key Stories

Tim Cook's Big Payday
Overview

  • One of the world's top stockholder adviser groups is urging investors to vote against Apple CEO Tim Cook's new pay package
  • The Institutional Shareholder Service (ISS) advises large shareholders – including hedge funds and mutual funds – on shareholder voting matters
  • This year, the group is telling investors to reject Tim Cook's $99M compensation package. Last year, Cook received $97M in compensation, mostly in stock
  • Since Cook took over from Steve Jobs in 2011, returns on Apple stock have been 1,000%+. In the last quarter, Apple made $35B in profit

 DIG DEEPER
Shareholder votes on salary are non-binding, but this is part of a wave of shareholder opposition to large executive pay packages. Last year, a record number of S&P 500 companies had shareholders reject executive pay packages.

21% of Gen Z LGBT+

Overview
  • A Gallup poll found that 20.8% of Gen Z identifies as LGBT+, up from 10.5% in 2017. The poll defined the + as “something other than heterosexual”
  • The same poll found that across generations, a record 7.1% of Americans identify as LGBT+, including 10.5% of millennials
  • Across all Americans, around 4% identify as bisexual, 1.5% as gay, 1% as lesbian, 0.7% as transgender, and 0.3% as “other than heterosexual.” Women are 3x as likely as men to identify as bisexual, per the poll
  • The rate of growth in the LGBT+ community is accelerating, Gallup says, as Gen Z reaches adulthood

 DIG DEEPER
Gallup concludes, "Given the large disparities in LGBT identification between younger and older generations of Americans, the proportion of all Americans who identify as LGBT can be expected to grow in the future as younger generations will constitute a larger share of the total U.S. adult population."

Kindergarten Shelled in Ukraine

Overview
  • Tensions between Russia and Ukraine grew Thursday
  • Ukraine accused Russia-backed separatists of firing artillery shells at a kindergarten in eastern Ukraine. Russia said the attack was staged
  • Pro-Russia separatists have controlled part of eastern Ukraine since 2014. 150,000+ Russian troops are currently located near there and in other territories surrounding Ukraine
  • Also Thursday, Russia accused Ukraine of waging a genocide against Russian-speakers in Ukraine. Ukraine's president, who comes from a Russian-speaking family, denied the allegation

 DIG DEEPER
Ukraine, the UK, the US, and others say Russia is looking to spark a conflict as pretext for an invasion. On Thursday, a Russian government spokesperson said, “The situation at the borders of Russia may ignite at any moment.”

Universal Blood Types?

Overview
  • A group of Canadian researchers believes they have identified a procedure that could make organ transplants universal, regardless of blood type
  • Currently, organ recipients must match the blood type of the organ donor. If not, the recipient's body is likely to reject the organ. The mismatch leads to long transplant wait times
  • The procedure would bathe organs with type A or B blood in an enzyme that converts them into the universally-accepted type O blood
  • Lab tests have been successful, and the researchers hope human trials will take place in 18 months

 DIG DEEPER
Blood type refers to the type of sugar molecules (antigens) on the surface of someone's red blood cells and blood vessels. 72% of Americans are O or A positive; just 1% are AB-negative, the rarest blood type.

Yesterday's Poll:

Which iconic American novel do you prefer?

To Kill a Mockingbird: 62.5%
The Great Gatsby: 37.5%

Yesterday's Question:

Where have you felt inflation the most over the last year?

Ryan from Brown Iron Brewery: "Gas and the raw ingredients needed to make our brews. Today's bit on the beer industry was no joke!"

Riya from Nashville: "Food and gas....it's getting to be a little too much"

Brenna from Scottsdale: "The grocery store. It’s nuts! Wait, can we even afford nuts now?"

General Feedback:

Bethany: "I would like to reply to the person who said “Jack Sparrow is the correct answer.” There should be a “Captain” in there somewhere…"

Mitchell from Columbus: "I didn’t answer this week’s 20 Questions since I don’t have a lot of city or beach experience, but was really disappointed to not see a “livin’ like Larry” reference for the Larry the Lobster question."

Helen from Washington: "I bought a Peloton in April of 2020 and it is the best investment in health I have ever made. I am obsessed with it and I bet most other bike owners would say the same. My biggest fear is that all the company turmoil would make my favorite instructors leave. Even with my beloved gym reopening I still use my bike almost every day because you can not beat the convenience and the entertainment."
Games Answer(s):
1. "movie scene" (Billie Jean) 2. "a dreamer" (Imagine) 3. "just fantasy" (Bohemian Rhapsody) 4. "RESPECT" (Respect)
