For my redistricting recaps, I’m slowly building an outlook of the upcoming 2022 U.S. House races. Each state will include a link to its respective post as well as a headline count of how many incumbents or open seats the state adds to the chart below. Once I’ve covered all 50 states’ new maps, we’ll have a full House seating chart that displays each party’s outlook in the midterm elections, tallying the number of incumbents as well as both open and competitive seats.

Indiana: +2 Dem (1 swing), +6 GOP, 1 Open Seat (lean GOP)

• Republican mapmakers avoided competitiveness, favored safer seats for all.

Iowa: +1 Dem incumbent (lean GOP), +3 GOP (2 swing)

• Iowa is a strong example of Republicans’ defensive approach to redistricting. They opted to maintain the status quo rather than jeopardizing swing districts for the sake of making Republican districts even safer.

Montana: +1 GOP, 1 Open Seat (lean GOP) [Gain 1 Seat]

• Montana is one of six states to gain one House seat. Most consider MT-01 as the state’s “new” district as it is expected to be significantly more competitive than MT-02.

Virginia: +7 Dem (2 swing), +4 GOP (2 swing)

• Virginia’s new congressional districts were drawn and approved by the state Supreme Court after the state’s bipartisan redistricting commission failed to agree on new district boundaries. Despite significant changes in boundaries, the partisan balance of the map is about the same as the previous map.

Final Score: +10 Dem, +14 GOP, 2 Open Seats
