Product management resources. Victoria Bertasoli had a lot of friends asking her to send them recommendations on product management content in the past months so she decided to structure it in one blog post. Mistakes that Product People Make
Earlier this week, I was invited to give a talk at a virtual Product meetup. It was a lot of fun and gave me a chance to practice a new talk I plan on continuing to give.
The topic? Mistakes that Product People Make.
I’ve literally interviewed hundreds of product people at this point in emceeing events, hosting our INDUSTRY Interview live video Q&A chat series, and co-hosting Rocketship.FM. In almost every interview, I always ask the question about mistakes – as it’s great to acknowledge them so we can all do our best to avoid them. In the talk, I detail 10 different mistakes I’ve heard over the years – but I’ll share two of them here.
- Early products tend to try to do way too much. They bloat themselves with mediocre “nice to have” features, which end up hiding those features that may actually have a chance to delight their users. The best new products keep things simple from the start. Remember when Cash App was Square Cash and all you could do was email somebody money? Sure, there were no dashboards or social features. But it felt… magical to me. It did one thing… really well. S/O to Jeff Morris Jr. for this one.
- When coaching product people, Product Leaders often fall back to strategies that have worked in the past. That sounds good, in theory, right? The problem is that every product person is different… and has their own unique motivations and desires. You may manage two product people at similar experience levels – but if one’s aspiration is to be a CPO and the other is to be the best Product Lead a team could ever have… you will need to manage, coach, and motivate them differently. I had fun talking this through with JJ Rorie.
The truth is there are soooo many more mistakes made. And again, I’m guilty of so many myself. What mistakes do you see, though? Let me know – I want to hear about more of them!
