Why Are Software Development Task Estimations Regularly Off by a Factor of 2-3?

Michael Wolfe writes a terrific (funny and spot-on) explanation you can share with frustrated colleagues. The purpose of estimation is to do just that - estimate. Being more accurate in your estimation requires a lot of practice to figure out everything that can happen on the road (using Michael's analogy) and re-risk it first (sometimes easier in software than driving a car). And still - it's only an estimate, even if you become very good at it.

@amasad: To build talent density in a startup you need to abstain from hiring good candidates to find the great ones. It takes a lot of discipline and a high pain tolerance to do the work yourself for a very long time. But it’s totally worth it and eventually you’ll hit a talent flywheel.
