Taking Stock

The events of this week will be prompting many around the world to take stock. Many people believed that the threat of war in Europe had been consigned to the history books following the fall of the Soviet Union. That and many other assumptions have been violently upended by Russian president Vladimir Putin. The true cost and consequences of this week’s events for Russia, Ukraine and the world will likely take years to reconcile but for now the human cost for Ukrainian civilians is only too clear, and more visible than ever with the conflict playing out on real-time over Twitter, TikTok, and Telegram.

The bad

A suicide prevention charity faces a backlash over data-sharing. Crisis Text Line’s decision to share anonymized messages from vulnerable adults with a spin-off for-profit arm has been called into question.
