Poems by Disabled and d/Deaf Poets and more

March 15, 2022

The Poetry Coalition, an alliance of more than 30 independent poetry organizations across the United States, is devoting 2022 to exploring the theme “The future lives in our bodies: Poetry & Disability Justice” in a series of programs across the country.

The line “The future lives in our bodies” is from the poem “Femme Futures” by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, who also curated the following special digital anthology of work by disabled and d/Deaf poets:

The Acceptance” by Raymond Antrobus
Sick4Sick” by torrin a. greathouse
jersey fems at the philly zoo” by Cyrée Jarelle Johnson
Triage” by Jody Chan
Mnemonic: ᎠᎩᏲᏟ/Agiyotli/Pain” by Qwo-Li Driskill
Mnemonic: ᎠᏓᏁᏗ/Adanedi/Gift” by Qwo-Li Driskill
Patients” by Aurora Levins Morales
A Song for Many Movements” by Audre Lorde
On Working Remotely & No Longer Commuting with Chronic Pain” by Camisha L. Jones
Portrait of My Gender as [Inaudible]” by Meg Day

“The poems in this folio are but a small selection of the vast array of disabled, d/Deaf, neurodivergent, and/or chronically ill poets out there. Because disability justice is a framework created by and centering the lives and issues of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color; Queer, Trans, and Two-Spirit disabled people, I chose to select poems by poets from those very groups.”

Announcing the 2022 In-Na-Po Fellows

Indigenous Nations Poets, a member of the Poetry Coalition, announced the 2022 cohort of fellows who will participate in the Inaugural Retreat in Washington, D. C. from April 25-29. The selected poets will gather with distinguished Indigenous faculty, In-Na-Po leaders, and U.S. Poet Laureate and Academy Chancellor, Joy Harjo, in April at the Library of Congress for the retreat. “And poetry helped me find meaning in my environment and a way to express the profundity and even the tragedy that surrounded me on a daily basis. I want to suggest that the illumination that poetry offers—in its succinct articulation of something that’s often otherwise ineffable—offers relief and consolation to people who feel those powerful undercurrents of life, but don’t quite have the words to express those feelings.”
