Should states temporarily waive gas taxes?

443 votes, 43 comments

Context: Several states pursue gas tax holidays.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - The state should find another way to provide relief in the short term for those with limited means who are dependent on driving while also continuing to adequately fund road maintenance. In the long term this could be done by replacing the gas tax with a road user tax with rates that are based on miles driven annually and income adjusted. This is especially important as more EVs are on the road and will be leaving the majority of road maintenance costs through the gas tax to those who cannot afford EVs. We should use the opportunity of higher gas prices to speed the transition to electric vehicles for all.
