Tim Ferriss - 5-Bullet Friday — March 25, 2022

Hi All!
Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring.
What I’m watching
“Black Market Marijuana” (Amazon, YouTube) on Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller (S2, E3). Description: “In 2016, California began a massive social experiment: legalized marijuana. But after four years, the black market is three times larger than the legal one. Mariana van Zeller (@MarianaVZ) sets off to find out what happened, who’s profiting, and which groups are racing to meet skyrocketing demands. Following an underground supply chain from growers to distributors, she journeys through the wild west of weed.” I was incredibly impressed by the investigative journalism, production value, and story composition of this episode. It covered a lot of bases and a lot of outstanding questions I had. I’ll be watching more episodes from this series.
What I’m listening to
“Far from Home” (YouTube, Spotify) by Aubrie Sellers (@aubriesellers).
What I’m reading
“A New Vision for Wolf Conservation After 150 Years of Yellowstone.” For my readers in the U.S.: If you’d like to help, you can find a call-to-action at the end of the article, or you can simply click here to be taken directly to the action. It takes less than 60 seconds, and every person counts.
Person I’m studying
Edward O. Thorp. From Wikipedia: “Edward Oakley Thorp is an American mathematics professor, author, hedge fund manager, and blackjack researcher. He pioneered the modern applications of probability theory, including the harnessing of very small correlations for reliable financial gain. Thorp is the author of Beat the Dealer, which mathematically proved that the house advantage in blackjack could be overcome by card counting. He also developed and applied effective hedge fund techniques in the financial markets and collaborated with Claude Shannon in creating the first wearable computer.”
Passages I’m pondering
“It’s dark because you’re trying too hard,” said Susila. “Dark because you want it to be light. Remember what you used to tell me when I was a little girl. ‘Lightly, child, lightly. You’ve got to learn to do everything lightly. Think lightly, act lightly, feel lightly. Yes, feel lightly, even though you’re feeling deeply. Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them.’ I was so preposterously serious in those days, such a humorless little prig. Lightly, lightly—it was the best advice ever given me.
Well, now I’m going to say the same thing to you, Lakshmi . . . Lightly, my darling, lightly. Even when it comes to dying. Nothing ponderous, or portentous, or emphatic. No rhetoric, no tremolos, no self-conscious persona putting on its celebrated imitation of Christ or Goethe or Little Nell. And, of course, no theology, no metaphysics. Just the fact of dying and the fact of the Clear Light.
So throw away all your baggage and go forward. There are quicksands all about you, sucking at your feet, trying to suck you down into fear and self-pity and despair. That’s why you must walk so lightly. Lightly, my darling. On tiptoes; and no luggage, not even a sponge bag. Completely unencumbered.”
— From Island by Aldous Huxley
And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.
Have a wonderful weekend, all.
Much love to you and yours,
Tim
P.S. Deal of the Week — JuneShine!
You don’t know it yet, but JuneShine’s going to be your new go-to happy-hour drink. Consistent with their tagline, “organic hard kombucha for a brighter buzz,” I do get a nice buzz, as it sports a hefty 6% ABV (alcohol by volume), but 1–2 drinks doesn’t punish me with a nasty hangover. I enjoy grabbing a can of JuneShine in the late afternoon after a workday or when hanging with friends on the weekend. You’ve also heard me drinking JuneShine in a few Random Show episodes with Kevin Rose. Grapefruit Paloma might be my personal favorite flavor, but I usually grab a Sampler Pack and rotate.
JuneShine is made with organic ingredients, and it is naturally gluten-free. The company is carbon-neutral, their brewery runs on renewable energy, and they donate one percent of sales to environmental nonprofits. As a 5-Bullet Friday subscriber, you can get an exclusive discount: receive 20% off your first purchase, plus free shipping on any orders over $75. Simply use code TIM at checkout. Taste what all the buzz is about and grab a Sampler Pack here: JuneShine.com/Tim.
P.P.S.
My current subscriber count on YouTube is 997,100. The suspense is killing me. If you haven’t yet, please subscribe to my YouTube channel here, and you could be the one who tips it over 1M!
