🎆 Microsoft backs down on Windows 11 browser choice

Since Windows 11’s release, Microsoft has made it surprisingly difficult to change your default web browser on Windows 11. The process took many clicks, forcing you to change each individual file association one by one with nags begging you to keep using Edge each time.

The situation was so bad that Mozilla built a workaround into Firefox—and then Microsoft changed Windows 11 to block that workaround.

This is a prime example of a “dark pattern.” Sure, Windows 11 let you change your default browser, but the operating system’s design made it very tedious. That surely resulted in more people using Microsoft Edge.

Now, Microsoft has backed down. A recent update for Windows 11 added a “Set Default” button to save you a lot of clicks when changing your default browser. Finally.

It’s especially sad it took so long because, these days, even Apple’s iPhones and iPads let you change your default web browser. Yes, in the initial release of Windows 11, it was harder to change your default web browser on a Windows PC than an iPad.
