Hello my friends.

Here's what I picked this week, enjoy!

1. React v18

TL;DR: What's new in React v18.

  • React Concurrency. As I understand, this is the internal mechanics by which React can interrupt rendering in the middle, perform some tasks, and then return back to rendering (rendering was synchronous before). This will allow instant response to user input, even if the component is in the process of a large rendering task. Apparently applications will now look “smoother” to users.
  • Automatic batching. In all the places where it wasn’t supported before: promises, setTimeout, built-in event handlers, etc.
  • Transitions. New feature, where we can set urgent and non-urgent component state updates.
  • New hooks: useId, useTransition, useDeferredValue, useSyncExternalStore and useInsertionEffect.

To summarize what’s new in React 18 – improved UX for users.

2. CTO last day: reflections, mistakes, and some learnings

TL;DR: Lessons from CTO position.

My notes:

  • Conflict is when the world models of two people do not match. To solve it, you have to get those people together and have them have a difficult and unpleasant conversation to resolve their conflict.
  • Technology is just a tool to solve business problems.
  • Any process is a system. If there is a problem with a process, then look at it from the point of view of the system. A system always has inputs, outputs, and a bottleneck.

3. SQL Visualizer

TL;DR: Visualized explanation of how SQL queries work.
