Seattle’s AI startup machine: The AI2 Incubator, an arm of the Allen Institute for AI, has spun out 15 startups over the past five years at a total valuation of more than $500 million. It's now moving into a new phase that offers a chance to cement late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s legacy for a new era of technology, and reinforce the Seattle region's status as a hub for artificial intelligence. From interviews with more than a dozen startup founders, AI2 staffers, board members and investors, GeekWire pieced together a picture of the incubator’s strengths and weaknesses, and the challenges ahead.
