Hackers are breaching Putin’s secrecy. Can you chip in $5 to help report on the leaks?

These documents reveal the private deliberations of state-owned media, the Russian central bank, and the world’s largest pipeline company.

Did you see this message? The Intercept is downloading and indexing hacked Russian documents — and we need your support to expose the secrets of President Vladimir Putin’s regime.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, hackers have obtained massive troves of Russian government and corporate data.

These leaks total more than 4.3 terabytes and reveal the private deliberations of state-owned media, the Russian central bank, and the world’s largest pipeline company. Some of them go back as far as 20 years and include millions of emails.

All of this should be a gold mine for investigative journalists, but how do you find the needles in such a large haystack?

Fortunately, this is exactly the kind of work The Intercept was founded to do, and our team collectively brings decades of experience in indexing and reporting on large datasets like these.

But this is a giant undertaking, requiring specialized technology and people to turn raw data into stories worthy of public interest. We’re not doing it by ourselves — in fact, we’re sharing our tools with independent Russian journalists who are now operating outside the country — but it’s an expense we could never have planned for.

So today we’re turning to you, our readers, to help fund this urgent project. Can you chip in to help report on Russian official secrets?

Thank you,
The Intercept team
