Ameen Rihani, born on November 24, 1876, in Ottoman Syria (present-day Lebanon), was a Lebanese American poet, essayist, and political activist from the Mahjar, a literary movement of the Arab diaspora. He was the author of many books, including The Book of Khalid (Dodd, Mead and Company, 1911) and Myrtle and Myrrh (Gorham Press, 1905), a collection of rhymed verse and the first poetry collection in English composed by an Arab poet in the twentieth century. He died on September 13, 1940.
 
The Literary Arts Emergency Fund Awards $4.3 Million to Historically Under-Funded Literary Arts Field 

“These grants remain vital because the impact of the emergency of COVID-19 remains very present in our lives,” said Elizabeth Alexander, president of the Mellon Foundation.

The Literary Arts Emergency Fund, launched and administered by the Academy of American Poets, the Community of Literary Magazines & Presses (CLMP), and the National Book Foundation in 2020, will distribute $4,300,000 in funding to 313 nonprofit literary arts organizations and publishers across the U.S. that have experienced continued financial losses due to COVID-19.

Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize

Established in 1975, this $25,000 award recognizes the most outstanding book of poetry published in the United States in the previous calendar year. The prize includes a ten-day residency at Glen Hollow in Naples, New York, and distribution of the winning book to hundreds of Academy of American Poets members.

Submissions for the 2022 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize will be accepted until May 15 (11:59 p.m. ET). The judges are Matthew ShenodaDanez Smith, and Sawako Nakayasu.
