How To Quit Your Job At 49 And Make A $6 Billion Fortune | Are Entrepreneurs Happier Than Other Employees? | And More

Last week, Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt signed into law a near-total ban on abortion, which will make performing the procedure a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Two days later, Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill banning abortions after 15 weeks without exceptions for rape, incest or human trafficking. And on Friday evening, feminist icon Gloria Steinem took the stage at New York’s Soho House to talk about why, in spite of the flurry of reproductive rights rollbacks we’ve seen this year (and last year, and the year before that…), she’s remaining a “hope-a-holic.”

“We have advanced. In my advanced age I can tell you it’s better than it was,” she said. “If you're ever feeling discouraged, all you need to do is look at the ‘70s.” She went on to note that the progress in gender equity that society has made over the next 40 years needs to be replicated over the next 40 years.

While Steinem was clear in her criticism of the recent spate of abortion restrictions (“If we don't control our own physical selves, we are not living in a democracy,” she said), she also provided
a call to action for the women in the audience: “The future can be what it should be because we are going to make it what it should be.”

Cheers,
Maggie

ICYMI: Stories From The Week

Serena Williams has reportedly teamed up with Sir Lewis Hamilton to back a bid to buy Chelsea Football Club from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, according to Sky News on Thursday, as the global bidding war to own one of soccer’s most famous clubs intensifies. (The sale is a consequence of sanctions imposed on Abramovich following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February.)

In related news:
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and officials from several other countries walked out of a Group of 20 meeting in Washington on Wednesday when a Russian delegate spoke, a source familiar with the matter told Forbes, a high-profile snub as U.S. officials seek to diplomatically and economically isolate Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Carolyn Childers and Lindsay Kaplan launched Chief, a membership-based networking organization for executive women, in 2019. Just three years later and after a $100 million Series B round of funding, the startup is valued at $1.1 billion. Here’s how Childers and Kaplan took their company to unicorn status.

In two fun pieces of news from the auction world: Artwork and other pieces that belonged to
late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg are going up for auction next week, including a handful of works by Pablo Picassoand a monogrammed black mink fur coat. And next month, one of the iconic blue and white gingham dresses worn by actress Judy Garland as Dorothy in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz could fetch a seven-figure sum; the costume was recently rediscovered after going missing for three decades.

Future Forum, a research consortium on the future of work launched by Slack and other partners, released on Tuesday the findings of its latest survey of 10,000 knowledge workers globally: non-executives are nearly twice as likely as top managers to work from the office every day, and their work-life balance scores are now 40% worse than executive respondents.

Check List

#1: Resist the urge to rage-quit. If you feel like you’re facing limited advancement opportunities, here are some ways you can pitch your bosses on a new and improved role rather than immediately walking out the door.

#2: Start now. You might feel as if you don’t have enough money to start contributing to your retirement fund. Reject that thinking and invest what you can—what’s most important is that you start and give your money time to grow.

#3: Own your decisions. A bevy of studies over the years suggest that entrepreneurs have higher degrees of happiness than rank-and-file employees. If you’re looking to improve your satisfaction at work, borrow a page from the entrepreneurial textbook and take ownership over a new project or initiative to boost your confidence and outlook.
