Pile-driving opening drums and clambering bass kick off this seminal song. Co-written by David Bowie with Iggy ad-libbing the lyrics after the pair fled to Berlin to escape raging heroin addictions and record an album. Admittedly not the best destination to rehab in 1977. But such a kick-ass life-affirming motherfucker of a song. Recorded at Hansa Tonstudio. Hunt Sales on drums, Tony Sales on bass, Carlos Alomar and Ricky Gardiner on guitars, David Bowie on piano. Engineered by Edu Meyer and Colin Thurston. Produced by David Bowie. That oh-so-catchy rhythm and chorus? David and Iggy stole it from the American Armed Forces call signal broadcast from Berlin. Check out this version of “Lust for Life” on Later… with Jools Holland. Recorded in 2016 when Iggy was sixty-nine. Queens of the Stone Age in dazzling red jackets are doing the honors as the supertight backing band. A manic shirtless Iggy flies onto the stage. Stand back. I’m worth a million in prizes.
