I Spent a Year in Space, and I Have Some Tips on Isolation

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly spent a year in space, so it goes without saying that he knows a thing or two about isolation. With many of us working suddenly from home and practicing social distancing, it is natural to feel disconnected, scattered, and stir crazy. Here is Scott’s advice for maintaining a sense of normalcy in an abnormal time. I've certainly had to make my own adjustments, but two things that have helped me enormously: getting a little bit of time outside each day and sticking to a schedule as best I can.

What Matters Most for Your Startup During a Crisis

I recently did an AMA on Relay and shared my thoughts on everything from remote work to building FYI publicly through content. I got a question about how startups can get through this unprecedented time. During any crisis, three things matter: your team, your customers, and your cash flow. Here is my advice on managing all three. What are you prioritizing at your startup right now?

How Do You Start Over Again After Your Business Fails?

I really enjoyed reading through this Hacker News thread, which revolves around this question: How do you start again after your business fails and you're feeling burnt out? I thought these ideas were interesting:

  • Work a job as normal and boring as you can find. It'll give you perspective on what "normal" problems are.
  • Conduct a thoughtful postmortem to help you close your last chapter properly.
  • Allow yourself to be bored. Spend a few months doing things that allow you to say, "Oh, now I see differently."
Going through a business failure is never easy, but I've found that some of the best entrepreneurs have their greatest successes after big failures. Give yourself a chance to reflect and get new perspectives, and soon enough, your creative energy will return again.

How to Strengthen Facebook Advertising Amid the Coronavirus

Here is a key change driven by the Coronavirus over the past month or so: Spikes in social usage are driving CPMs to historically low costs. During life under quarantine in China, for instance, time online rose 20%, and the same thing is now happening in the United States. It's important to be sensitive about how you do your marketing right now, but there is also an interesting opportunity for you to improve your ads and reach more people at a lower cost. How do you think you'll adjust your ad messaging over the next several months?

How Leadfeeder Scaled Its Signups to Over 200 per Month

If you want to build compounding traffic, you have to focus on SEO. It's important to note that while there is a ton of terrible content on the internet created for the purposes of keyword targeting rather than adding value to end readers, you don't have to fall into that trap. You can focus on SEO and high-quality content at the same time. This is a useful read on how Leadfeeder did just that, scaling trial signups directly attributed to blog posts to over 225 signups a month.

The founder of Toyota Industries Sakichi Toyoda invented the concept 5 Whys, which is simply the process of asking "why?" five times to help you get to the root cause of the issue or problem you're facing. This article explains what the concept is more fully, why it is beneficial, and how best to utilize it in your own business.
