The GIST - Got the horses in the back
What a weekend!
The North Carolina Courage are your 2022 Challenge Cup champions, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the first-ever Miami Grand Prix and Rich Strike (a horse) overcame 80-1 odds to secure a massive upset win at the Kentucky Derby. More on these incredible performances (and much more!) below.
- P.S. Speaking of Ws, big shout out to everyone who participated in our April referral contest, and especially to our winner, Cassy Moran. Now, let’s scroll.

Quote of the day
We always felt if we could just get in, we'd have a shot. We proved it today.
— Rick Dawson on his horse Rich Strike’s historic Kentucky Derby victory on Saturday, the Derby’s greatest odds upset since 1913. What makes this story even better? Dawson only found out Rich Strike could compete about 30 seconds before the Friday entry deadline. The man moves fast.
🏀 NBA playoffs: Any given Sunday
The GIST: Grab your balloons and streamers because the NBA is proving four really is a party with a thrilling Game 4 doubleheader behind us and more pivotal action on deck tonight.
Yesterday’s games: Sunday brought two stunners, with a pair of squads evening their series at two games apiece. First, despite a game-high 35 points from Phoenix’s Devin Booker, the Western Conference No. 4 Dallas Mavericks notched a 111–101 home win over the top-seeded Suns. Page = turned.
- Over in the East, the No. 4 Philadelphia 76ers defeated the top-seeded Miami Heat 116–108, with Philly’s Joel Embiid (24 points) showing out in his second game back since suffering an orbital fracture. Now it’s anyone’s ball game.
Tonight’s games: After Saturday’s narrow 103–101 win — highlighted by Giannis Antetokounmpo (pronounced YAH-niss ah-det-oh-KOON-boh) notching 42 points and notably very few fouls — the East's No. 3 Milwaukee Bucks (up 2-1) host the No. 2 Boston Celtics at 7:30 p.m. ET.
- Then, in what continues to be the most contentious matchup, the No. 3 Golden State Warriors — fresh off a monster 142–112 Game 3 win — look to take a 3-1 series lead over the No. 2 Memphis Grizzlies at 10 p.m. ET.
- Memphis superstar Ja Morant — who’s unlikely to play in Game 4 due to a knee injury — tweeted (and then promptly deleted) his displeasure with what he believed was a flagrant foul against him during Saturday’s loss. As if this series needed more drama.
⚽🏒🎾🏎️ Quick hits
⚽ NWSL Challenge Cup: In a victory that was, unfortunately, overshadowed by several scary injuries and missed calls, the North Carolina Courage defeated the Washington Spirit 2–1 to claim the celebratory beer mug Challenge Cup trophy on Saturday.
- With the second-annual preseason tournament done and dusted, it’s time to fully focus on the regular season…and for the league to prioritize player support and care.
🏒 NHL: A full slate of NHL playoff matchups are on deck this week, but all eyes are on the Colorado Avalanche, who could secure a series sweep over the Nashville Predators if they win Game 4 tonight at 9:30 p.m. ET.
- And look out for the two-time defending champs Tampa Bay Lightning, who evened their series at two games apiece with last night’s dominant 7–3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Game 5 blasts off tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. ET.
🎾 Madrid Open: Tunisia’s own Ons Jabeur (pronounced ONS jah-BURR) became the first Arab and African player to win a WTA 1000 title when she beat American Jessica Pegula in the Madrid Open on Saturday.
- Apart from her on-court victories, Jabeur is inspiring off-court wins, too. Venus Williams said, "You’re gonna see a whole other generation of women from North Africa coming into tennis. It's going to be all owed to her."
🏎️ Motorsports: Defending F1 World Champion, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, edged past Ferrarri’s Charles Leclerc yesterday to win the first-ever Miami Grand Prix (GP), and his second GP in a row. Can’t stop Verstappen.
- Driver Jamie Chadwick defended her own throne on the track, leading every lap in yesterday’s Miami race to secure her fourth straight W Series win. Jamie, you absolutely deserve it.
🏀 WNBA opening weekend: Catch your breath
The GIST: Throw your orange hoodie in the wash because after a wild opening weekend, the 26th WNBA season resumes tomorrow.
Who made history: 2022 No. 1 overall draft pick and former Kentucky standout Rhyne Howard (pronounced RY-uhn) wasted no time making her mark in the Atlanta Dream’s 66–59 win over the Dallas Wings on Saturday.
- Howard played a team-high 36 minutes and posted a team-high 16 points. By the third quarter, Howard had already made W history as the first player to make a debut with strong stats in at least five categories. If this is how she’s starting her career, we’re in for a treat.
Who’s back: Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon marked her return to the W by making some history of her own. The Aces’ 106 points in their victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday (who played their season opener without Brittney Griner for the first time in seven years) was a record for a coach in a regular-season WNBA debut. Making it rain.
Who’s on the rebound: After a lingering ankle injury hampered her last two seasons, Sabrina Ionescu is healthy and happy, after posting 25 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals to lead her NY Liberty to an 81–79 upset win over the Connecticut Sun. Good 4 u, Sabrina.
