Why did the Supreme Court rule in Sen. Ted Cruz's favor on campaign finance?

Supreme Court overturns law that barred Ted Cruz from fully recouping a personal loan he made to his campaign.
Texas Tribune (Center) • Factual Grade 71% • 4 min read

The nation’s high court said in a 6-3 ruling that a 2002 law — which puts a cap of $250,000 raised after an election to pay back loans that candidates gave their own campaigns before election day — violated the First Amendment. Chief Justice John Roberts said in the majority opinion that [the cap] could lead to less campaign messaging.
    ...
Cruz’s team said [the decision] would allow less wealthy candidates to remain competitive. When Cruz was first fighting for his spot in the Senate, he was up against a wealthy opponent. So Cruz loaned his 2012 campaign over $1 million to close the gap. Because of the law struck down Monday, he could never recoup $545,000 of that loan.
    ...
Justice Kagan wrote in dissent that when candidates recoup money for a loan to their campaign, the dynamics of contributions change because the money is going straight to the politician, unlike traditional campaign dollars. She alleged that striking down the rule allows lawmakers to get paid directly and, in exchange, they can offer political favors.

Should people who have had recent mental evaluations be barred from owning guns?

571 votes, 82 comments

Context: Buffalo shooter had received mental evaluation for making threats.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - I am pro 2nd amendment. However, a person that is deemed a mental health risk should not be allowed to own a gun. Aside from the clear risk to society, the risk of personal harm is higher, as well. Anyone that has loved and/or lost someone with a risky mental health condition would likely agree. Firearms are the number one method of suicide among men. Many could argue that those might find another way, however, there is a reason for it, as it is the least painful and most expedient, and it could certainly prevent some cases of suicide.

No - As others have pointed out you can have a mental evaluation as part of a job screening. You can be evaluated for a ton of things that would not mak...

Unsure - It depends on the nature of the reason for the eval...
