The Story

Remember Covid? Another virus is spreading in the world.  On Monday, Nigeria confirmed 21 monkeypox cases. One death.

Should we talk about it…

The rare disease has also been reported in at least a dozen countries.

But what is it?

Monkeypox is in the same family as smallpox but is historically less severe. It usually begins with flu-like symptoms (fevers, headaches, muscle aches, chills, and exhaustion). Within at least a week, a rash develops on the face and spreads to the rest of the body, lasting for about two to four weeks. Other symptoms can include genital lesions. But in some recent cases, the rash has been appearing first.

How does it spread?

Monkeypox can spread through close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and even contaminated materials like bedding.

It can spread through sexual contact, but it’s not a sexually transmitted infection

Am I at risk?

Human-monkeypox infections are rare, especially outside of Central and Western Africa where the virus is endemic in animals and circulates primarily in heavily forested areas. The virus can be contained with vaccines that are already stockpiled and available in some countries.

If the outbreak spreads… Take care.

Until then, monitor for symptoms, when the virus is believed to be most contagious. 

What’s with Monkeys

Due to the close genetic relationship between monkeys and humans, disease-causing organisms are easily exchanged between them. Think… bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses.

Should we kill all monkeys?

No. They’re cute. But… Should we?
