New Old Age - Slower creatives
Have you seen “Slow Horses” on Apple TV+? It’s a wry British spy thriller series about the comeuppance of a motley band of exiled M15 officers being set up to take the fall for a false flag operation that goes horribly, terribly wrong. These rejects are housed in an administrative tenement called Slough House under a miserable and dissolute alcoholic boss who’s happy to admit they’re all losers, but they’re his fuckin’ losers. Jason Bourne and Ethan Hunt they’re not. What the series thankfully lacks in reckless and pointless high-speed car chases and high-powered shootouts is more than made up for with ingenious pacing, sardonic plot twists and cutthroat-sharp dialogue. As you watch each episode unhurriedly reveal itself, you know you’re in good hands. There’s a wealth of experience in front and behind the camera that gives it a certain gravitas. Where does that depth and dignity come from? It comes from age. The lead actors Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas are sixty-four and sixty-one respectively. The writer whose novels the series is based on is Mick Herron, fifty-eight. The key screenwriters who worked the novels into the series are Morwenna Banks, sixty, and Will Smith, fifty. One of the executive producers Graham Yost is sixty-two. Another executive producer Gail Mutrux is seventy-six. The theme song? That’s written by none other than Mick Jagger who’s seventy-eight. Season two is coming soon. If you liked this post from New Old Age, why not share it? |
