Progress Report 6: Executing My Freebie Strategy
Progress Report 6: Executing My Freebie StrategyWelcome back to I'm Learning Out Loud, a newsletter about an instructional designer who is trying to create and launch an online course while publicly documenting it along the way.Oh hello there! It’s been a while since my last update. One of the perks of being self-employed is that my boss doesn’t mind if I take a month long vacation. 😎 But I’M BACK and have some exciting things to show you. Y'all ready for this? First, let’s talk about learning experience maps. You may know the concept of customer journey mapping in the context of marketing or UX design. It’s like a visual storyboard of how a customer uses a product or engages with a business. Similarly, a learning experience (LX) map visualizes the process a learner goes through in a course. Here’s an example for a financial literacy course: (which btw are really popular right now, for good reason) An image like this is highly conceptual though. So I turned it into a more detailed course plan. Check this out: When creating an online course, one of the biggest hurdles we face is getting a handle on all the moving parts. With a map like this, we can organize all the content, activities, and ideas in one place. Most importantly, it’s a bird's-eye view of the journey we're taking the learners on. Freebies, lead magnets, and MVPs—oh my!In case you missed it, in my last report I shared my plan to make a journey mapping template specifically designed for people who make online courses. In a few days, I’ll be launching my Learning Experience Map Template built in Notion. Here’s a lil teaser: Plus, anyone who wants feedback on their course map can book a session with me via Calendly. Both the template and feedback sessions will cost $0. Yet I’m still receiving valuable assets in return:
More to comeI’ll be hitting ‘publish’ on all this next week! I’m also going to post more examples of LX maps for different types of learning experiences. I hope these visuals help people imagine how to use the template for their own course planning (because we learn by observation and modeling, aka “monkey see, monkey do” 🐵). As always, I appreciate hearing your thoughts and feedback. So feel free to leave a comment or message me directly at brainoflaraine@gmail.com. Thanks for reading and I’ll report back soon! Laraine Did you know feedback is one of the most critical factors for learning? So if you have any thoughts, ideas, or constructive criticism about this newsletter or project, please don’t hesitate to fill out this anonymous form: |
