THE TL;DR 💨
  • Carbon accounting should be compared to GAAP accounting
  • Quality data is important for accuracy
  • Estimates can fill gap in the interim as businesses enhance their trackin over time

Carbon accounting has become one of the hottest sectors for investment in climate. With $365mm in funding for carbon accounting software in 2021 alone, paired with the SEC working on a climate disclosure policy it’s easy to say that the companies that build in this sector are primed for high growth and adoption.

I sat down with James Newsome, Chief Data Science Officer at Persefoni, to dig into and uncover the real opportunity for carbon accounting software. In this episode, we debunk popular misconceptions about carbon accounting and what it takes for a business to implement them.

James also brings up more depth on how investors and Founders considering building solutions in the broader carbon accounting space should think about the problems in the space. We close out the conversation with some additional context on the SEC's climate disclosure policy and what that could mean as a broader signal and opportunity in the space.
