The ADHD Urge to Find the Online ADHD Community Annoying

One man's brave journey from diagnosis to acceptance

My recent ADHD diagnosis came foremost as a relief. The alternative — that there was no exculpatory explanation for my many failures — was unappealing. Throughout my life I have been chaotic, impulsive, lazy, and disorganized to an extent which has caused me fairly significant problems: arrests, hospitalizations, substance abuse issues, getting fired from almost every job I’ve ever had. But it wasn’t until I started doing the kind of work where you have to stare at a laptop screen for eight hours a day that the possibility really occurred to me. I’m not saying it’s unimportant whether you’d class this set of traits as a disposition, the product of environmental factors, or an innate neurological disorder — obviously each explanation comes with different implications — but I have arrived at the conclusion that I don’t really care, or at least not in relation to myself. I sought a diagnosis largely because I had found taking Ritalin helped to mitigate these traits and their consequences, and I got fed up with buying it from the dark web. I don’t want to invest any more in having a diagnosis than that, but I’m glad I got one.

But at the same time, I felt uneasy at being thrust into an online community which I’d long considered kind of annoying: What’s really striking is the extent to which a disorder associated with garrulousness and substance abuse has been captured so utterly by nerds. To what neurodivergent urges would I now be subjected? Would I be tempted to start drawing pastel-colored webcomics about buying too many notebooks or set up a TikTok account with my boyfriend in which he is assigned the role of baffled but tolerant neurotypical and I am essentially a child? Would I start claiming that innocuous behaviors like “Googling stuff,” “using emojis,” “being able to concentrate sometimes but not always,” and “watching cartoons” arise directly from my newly confirmed condition? Would I begin to construct elaborate metaphors along the lines of “ADHD is basically like having a poltergeist that follows you around and moves your stuff” or “ADHD is having a werewolf that lives inside your brain: the secret is not trying to control the werewolf, but fully embracing that you are this creature”? I didn’t want to do any of those things, but I did start to consider what we are telling ourselves — and one another — about ADHD. Continue reading

Nothing Wrong With Hate-Checking a Stranger’s Alt Every Night

Welcome to Miss Type, a column about etiquette in the digital age. This week: Is it healthy to be this obsessed with hate-checking a stranger’s alt account?

Unconventional wisdom: I don’t think social media is toxic because it breeds jealousy in me, but because it encourages a sense of smugness that already needs no prodding to spill forth from my guts. I can be a smarmy, self-satisfied type, and every day is a fight to keep that to myself. I’ve found through trial and error that sequestering the evidence strictly in my private Notes app diary is a better strategy for navigating modern living than attempting to tweet about it in a wry or self-deprecating way.

But the risks and joys of Twitter aren’t solely what you might say, there is also what you may read. For example, there’s one account I can’t quit checking, and I use it to self-soothe by indulging my worst impulses. It’s the alt account of a person I don’t follow (I manually search for it, every day) and who doesn’t know I exist. They’re sort of my tether, but I have no interest in rectifying our broken halves into a whole. They’re addicted to posting, and their tweets range from scream-y takes about major league baseball to “she’s a dumb cunt” quote tweet callouts this person is too cowardly to do on main to staged thirst traps employing their toddler as a prop. Sure Are a Lot of Job Openings at Kraken

Remember Kraken? Earlier this month, the New York Times reported that the crypto exchange company had announced something called the “Jet Ski Program.” It involved a 31-page document sketching Kraken’s “libertarian philosophical values” and commitment to “diversity of thought” — a diversity of thought which, as far as CEO Jesse Powell was concerned, seemed to mostly involve debates about whether women are “brainwashed” and if anyone “can refer to another person as the N-word.”

Those who didn’t like the program were free to resign with four months pay, Powell told employees at a June meeting, if they “affirmed that they would never work at Kraken again.” Hence the program’s name: “If you want to leave Kraken,” read a memo quoted by the Times, “we want it to feel like you are hopping on a jet ski and heading happily to your next adventure!”

Well, this morning, some savvy communications director sent out a press release headlined: “Kraken hunts for lion’s share of crypto job market.” It detailed a recent study from Crypto Jobs List, which found that Kraken had posted more jobs in the past week than any other crypto company in America.
