Electric Speed from Jane Friedman
A note from Jane

When Mark and I moved to Cincinnati this spring, I had the disagreeable task of finding us a new personal trainer. Wed already been working with an ideal person in Charlottesville, and you know how it is. You feel like its impossible to start all over again with someone new.

And while neither of us are particularly athletic (nor do we have any goals aside from counteracting our sedentary work life), we loved the shared routine and experience with our trainer, who worked with us both at the same time.

In Cincinnati, we visited a few gyms and were turned away by trainers who already had more clients than they could handle. Never mind finding an ideal person—would we find anyone at all?

Finally we found someone who did have availability but worked with clients in a very different manner than our last trainer. While we could try and force a special arrangement, it wasn’t all that feasible for Mark and I to continue training as a pair. There were also a couple smartphone apps we’d have to use—one for scheduling and another during the session itself. It made us wonder if this new trainer’s approach might be a little rote and hands off.

I really wanted to replicate what we had before, but it seemed we should at least try this new trainer’s system rather than continue the search.

I’m glad we did, because his methods have been obviously refined and tailored for his strengths, training approach, and personality. While I was tempted to try and make him conform to our desires, we wouldn’t have gotten the best experience that way.

It’s something I try to remember when I disagree with how some businesses or freelancers choose to operate. Almost always there is a reason for how they’ve structured their work and approach. I like looking for that reason.

Jane’s Electric Speed List
Here are some of the latest things I’ve discovered. (I am not paid to mention any of these resources; there are no affiliate links.)
Super amazing YouTube subtitle search engine
This is a brilliant site to help you unearth discussion of very specific things on YouTube. You can search for your name, for book titles, for other authors, for song lyrics, for concepts, anything. But it only works for YouTube videos that have subtitles, of course.

Practical use case: plug in comparable authors or titles and see if any YouTube channels come up that you should approach as a potential guest.

Similar tool: VideoMentions
Make custom, real-world maps
This is a good tool to bookmark, especially if you often plan trips, events, or conferences where you’d like to create a custom map for a larger group. Check out Felt.
Beware: creative diversion ahead, Townscaper
As a kid, I loved the classic SimCity—I remember the background music to this day. And I can still get sucked into it if I let myself.

Townscaper is not the same, but still offers the satisfaction and wonderment of building a place from scratch. Visually delightful and charming. H/t Dense Discovery
Another way to correct mistaken caps use
In the last issue, I shared a site for correcting text that’s accidentally been written in all-caps. (It also helps adjust for any problematic case usage.) But several astute readers shared with me the following Word tip. Here’s what Jane Mackay said: "Regarding changing case, did you know that in MS Word shift + F3 changes the case? It cycles through lowercase, initial cap, uppercase. It’ll work on the single word that your cursor is in, or whatever’s highlighted. What’s funny is that thanks to copy editing many research papers—particularly the reference sections—that keyboard command has become so automatic that I unthinkingly try to use it in other realms, e.g. email."

This presentation offers specific techniques for developing and deepening your knowledge of story craft that you can practice every day, by doing things you’re already doing—reading books and watching movies and television—but shifting your focus from simple enjoyment to objective analysis.
Your turn: TikTok accounts
In the last issue, I asked you to tell me about your favorite TikTok accounts. Heres what you said:

  • I love watching @theresavandamstylist on TikTok. She is a 20-something hair salon owner in Illinois who not only does jaw dropping transformations to people’s hair color, but she also does hilarious and cringe-worthy "Karen" skits of difficult customers. Watching her "Karen" skits have made me feel more confident in engaging with difficult people. —Kelly Kandra Hughes
  • My new addiction involves TikTok talking cat videos: @3southerncats.and.momma @aymieandgracie @jndcdc —Lisa Angle
  • Thriller/suspense author @deborahgoodrichroyce —Susie Stangland
  • Favorite TikTok: @ejebooks —Dr. Alice Anne LeBaron
  • Becca Syme: always encouraging advice for writers —Gayle Trent
  • Hands down, @esperborzoi —Dawn Groves
