A note from Jane

When Mark and I moved to Cincinnati this spring, I had the disagreeable task of finding us a new personal trainer. We’d already been working with an ideal person in Charlottesville, and you know how it is. You feel like it’s impossible to start all over again with someone new.

And while neither of us are particularly athletic (nor do we have any goals aside from counteracting our sedentary work life), we loved the shared routine and experience with our trainer, who worked with us both at the same time.

In Cincinnati, we visited a few gyms and were turned away by trainers who already had more clients than they could handle. Never mind finding an ideal person—would we find anyone at all?

Finally we found someone who did have availability but worked with clients in a very different manner than our last trainer. While we could try and force a special arrangement, it wasn’t all that feasible for Mark and I to continue training as a pair. There were also a couple smartphone apps we’d have to use—one for scheduling and another during the session itself. It made us wonder if this new trainer’s approach might be a little rote and hands off.

I really wanted to replicate what we had before, but it seemed we should at least try this new trainer’s system rather than continue the search.

I’m glad we did, because his methods have been obviously refined and tailored for his strengths, training approach, and personality. While I was tempted to try and make him conform to our desires, we wouldn’t have gotten the best experience that way.

It’s something I try to remember when I disagree with how some businesses or freelancers choose to operate. Almost always there is a reason for how they’ve structured their work and approach. I like looking for that reason.

In the last issue, I shared a site for correcting text that’s accidentally been written in all-caps. (It also helps adjust for any problematic case usage.) But several astute readers shared with me the following Word tip. Here’s what Jane Mackay said: "Regarding changing case, did you know that in MS Word shift + F3 changes the case? It cycles through lowercase, initial cap, uppercase. It’ll work on the single word that your cursor is in, or whatever’s highlighted. What’s funny is that thanks to copy editing many research papers—particularly the reference sections—that keyboard command has become so automatic that I unthinkingly try to use it in other realms, e.g. email."
