Glowreel - I’m Beyond Honoured

Glowreel Purple Text Logo

We’re getting down to business this week - more BIPOC women are venturing into entrepreneurship than ever before. Plus, Wimbledon whites are up for debate and we’re getting a bit more personal with the recos.

Meanwhile, this week’s trailblazing woman feature is all about the Stellar South Asian Women 2022. And … I’m included as a finalist! I’m feeling incredibly honoured, and I owe it all to you. Your support and enthusiasm for Glowreel is what keeps me going, and what keeps this community growing.

On that note, if you enjoy the Glowreel newsletter, please share it with a friend or two and encourage them to subscribe 🙏🏽

Let's get glowing

BIPOC Woman News Round Up!

Stellar South Asian Women - Glowreel - Amplifying and celebrating women of colour; BIPOC women

It’s Business Time:
BIPOC women owned businesses are on the rise
🆙
A recent survey found that almost half of 2021’s new entrepreneurs (in the US) were women, up from 28% in 2019. The share of new Black business owners tripled to 9%. Meanwhile the UAE saw the number of women founding their own businesses grow by a whopping 68% in 2020, compared to 2019.

The driving factors behind the rise?
Pandemic related job-losses is the obvious one. Other key reasons include childcare access (or lack thereof) and lack of equality and representation in the workplace.

Ok, but what about the current economic climate?
ICYMI, the global economy isn’t doing so well. Plus, the fact still remains that only around 2% of venture capital funding goes to women (with BIPOC women only receiving around 0.5% of funding).

But, it’s not all doom and gloom. Goldman Sachs and Starbucks are investing millions in diverse woman owned businesses. And Ebay UK just launched a hub for Black-owned businesses. Over in Australia, the Anyone Can accelerator program is taking applications for BIPOC women as we speak (go,go,go!)

Extra Nuggets 👀

Glowreel Recos

What we’re loving this week:

Entertainment - Ms Marvel on Disney Plus. The show is a celebration of diaspora communities feat. a South Asian, Muslim, Pakistani American teenage girl as the main character. Here 👏🏾 for 👏🏾 it 👏🏾

Skincare - Zove Beauty’s Glow Slow Overnight Face Mask. Designed to restore your skin while you sleep, and it actually works. I use this most nights, and don’t need to use anything else on my skin. Very obsessed with this one 🧖🏾‍♀️

Dining - Well, drinking technically! We’re currently obsessed with jalapeño rosé … because we all love to add a little bit of spice to our lives 🤌🏽 The perfect way to cool down in the summer, or to warm up in the winter. Not a fan of alcohol? Try adding jalapeños to a non-alcoholic rosé. Winning!

It’s Shilpa here. A bit of a different trailblazing woman spotlight this week!

I’m beyond honoured to have been included as a finalist in the Australian South Asian Centre’s Stellar South Asian Women 2022 for amplifying BIPOC women’s voices through Glowreel! I don’t talk about my achievements on here often. But this is a super proud moment for me 🥺

The Stellar South Asian Women series celebrates and amplifies the work of South Asian women. And honestly, every single finalist is doing incredible, groundbreaking work (I’m humbled to be listed among them tbh). Check out all the finalists here - I have no doubt you’ll be inspired after reading it.
