CPACC #7 - Disabilities Categories - Deaf-blindness & Speech

Today we are going to talk about two more categories of disability as we continue the study for CPACC certification: Deaf-blindness Disabilities and Speech Disabilities.

Deaf-blindness Disabilities is a condition that includes both deafness and blindness. These individuals experience the characteristics of both disabilities, with the added complexity that sensory inputs are reduced to touch, smell and taste. Touch is the only means of complex communication available, so Braille for these people is critical, and sign language for those who still have some sight. Between 0.2% and 2% of the world's population is deaf-blind.

Language disabilities may differ between slurred speech, slurred articulation, stuttering, or no ability to speak at all. The ability to physically speak may not be related (may be due to trauma, for example). There are three categories.

  • Articulation disorder: Related to difficulties in articulating sounds, slurred or slurred speech due to the muscles required for speech.
  • Aphasia: Affects the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write, usually caused by brain damage such as stroke or infection. These individuals may not recognize written or spoken words, thus affecting speech itself.
  • Mutism: Inability to speak, either due to brain damage, muscle damage, emotional, psychological or a combination of these. There are three categories, selective mutism, where the person chooses not to speak, partial mutism, a person who cannot speak due to anxiety on certain occasions, or total mutism.

Apple and Google have been fighting for map dominance for nearly a decade. In 2012, just months after Google Maps first hit one billion users, Apple Maps was set as the default mapping application on IOS.

The wide range of UX methods is one of the things that makes UX such an interesting field. Some methods, like usability testing, have been around for decades. Others are more recent additions, and some seem to be just slight variations on other existing methods.

Software is lovely, but we know firsthand that it can be terrible. It’s deflating to enter an unexpected experience with tools we typically have fluency with. It doesn’t instill confidence in ourselves or the product.

If you jump straight into a design tool you’re not using it, it’s using you and it’s sucking your creativity dry.

Very rarely is exactly one design system created to serve exactly one product that expresses exactly one design language. Nearly all the design systems we’ve worked on require a high degree of flexibility in order to properly serve our clients’ needs.
